Bernadette (my family always called her Mrs. Fortune) joined us in 1976 when she moved into our home to look after my 9 month old daughter while I returned to work. I knew that she would be a loving, competent and reliable caregiver when I hired her. What I did not expect was that she would be come a lifelong, trusted and important member of our extended family for the next 44 years.
Everyone knew Mrs. Fortune and looked forward to seeing her over the years at family gatherings and events. We all appreciated her listening ear, wise counsel, solid judgement and kind, giving heart. She was a model for us all - coping with and accepting whatever came her way, never complaining, and handling all hardships with dignity, grace and optimism.  She was always interested in our lives and celebrated our joys and sorrows, always ready to listen, help and offer support.
Sadly, we must say good bye today to our brave, strong and compassionate friend. Little did I know how blessed we were that day when she rang my doorbell, met my baby daughter and agreed to join our family. We will be eternally grateful that we had all of these years together. We love you.

I was a teenager when I first met Aunt Laurel when she visited Grenada and stayed with my grandparents, who were her cousins.  

She was always gentle and soft spoken as she traced the family line with us. One of the things I came to know about her,  later on, is that she had a deep love for her family, relatives and friends. We considered her the matriarch of the family in Canada. She never failed to have  family lunches where she invited the Canadian side once a family member visited. It was quite a spread that she and Auntie Joyce would "put down."

I also noted that even during her illness, she never lamented on it but was more concerned how the others were doing.

Aunt Laurel will definitely be missed for the fruits of the spirit which she embodied - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

May she Sleep in Peace!

Humble, soft spoken and very unassuming! This is just a few words to describe Aunty Laurel. 

She was a tower of strength in her quiet way. She always had sound advice to offer. As family, she always made you feel welcome and appreciated. Always quick to lend a helping hand. It was in this respect that l got to understand her true nature. When Uncle Dan was undergoing medical treatment in Canada, she was there every step of the way giving whatever assistance she could. She never complained. She saw it as her duty. For this, l shall always be grateful. 

To the rest of the family, l say cheer up. Let us not sorrow as those who have no hope. We are confident that we will see her again, one day.  Love, Maureen Wiilson

It is with a Heavy Heart that  we the Dumont /Blackman family  extend Our Deepest Sympathy to the family and friends of Aunty Laurel as we fondly referred to her  
Growing up in the Beautiful Island of Grenada on my Way to and from School I would pass her everyday Say hello as was expected  only to be greeted with the most Beautiful Smile   , Little did I know years later coming to Canada I would come in contact ,This time to be part of the Family and welcomed by all  On January 2nd when Ron , Rachel and I decided to spend the Day with her little did I know that would have been our last Physical Contact  as our New Norm   soon because Physical Distancing We kept in contact via the phone and before I could say hello, it was asking how was everyone  When I called and did not get an answer I would call Aunty Joyce and on May 8  when I did was to be told she went  to  the Hospital on that day   I continued my 10 AM  calls and it was the same ,her asking how was everyone doing, forgetting I was checking in on her , some I got through others I did not. I can  tell you this was the hardest time  not being able to see her  and hear her voice   We all know that you are in a Better Place. No more pain and if anyone was prepared   to meet The Maker we know you were .

To the Family I say on behalf of our Family  we are please that our  paths crossed   because our lives have been changed for the better by meeting someone so special.

Up until age 8, I was raised by my mom and my live-in housekeeper. Bernadette Fortune dedicated her life to caring for others and to this day she remained a valuable part of our lives and family.  For 44 years, Mrs. Fortune took part in all of our family celebrations and major events.  She was an incredible person who made a huge impact on my life and will be deeply missed.

I had the chance to meet and spend time with this most wonderful soul. She will be dearly missed.
