Fred was born in Sneek, Friesland and grew up in Makkum, Friesland, The Netherlands. In 1952, he immigrated to Canada and lived in Cochrane, Ontario where he was a lumberjack. Subsequently, he moved to the Niagara Region where he started working as a house painter. From there, he became a sign painter. In 1967, he moved to Toronto to start working at George Brown College teaching sign painting and graphic arts. He retired from George Brown College in 1994. Fred met Nelly in 1967 and they got married in 1969. Miriam was born in 1971 and David was born in 1973.
Fred and Nelly spent their retirement years traveling. They enjoyed camping and made multiple trips across Canada and the US in their Volkswagen camper. They also traveled in Europe visiting family in the Netherlands and exploring new countries.
We grieve Fred’s death but know that he is at peace.
