BATTISTA (Nee RICCI), GEMMA. January 12, 1960 - August 7, 2021 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gemma Battista announce her passing at home after a difficult battle with ALS. Beloved wife of 38 years to John. Loving mother of Sara (Will), Patrick (Ashlyn), and Christian. Proud Nonna to Ava. She was born to the deceased Domenico and Pasqua Ricci and the second of their three children, the late Maria and her younger brother Joe. Gemma will also be greatly missed by her extended family and wide breadth of friends from her childhood, volunteering efforts, teaching, and variety of other associations she was involved in. With an easy grin and infectious laugh, the list goes on for those she touched with her vivacious demeanour and incredible zest for life.
Gemma was a primary school teacher for 33 years. She fulfilled many roles throughout her life, including wife, mom, caregiver, friend, volunteer and mentor. She was the primary caregiver for her mother for 25 years but this role was most challenging in the five years before Pasqua’s death in 2020. Upon her retirement, Gemma found a way to continue with her passion of supporting children in their literacy development by becoming a mentor with the Empower Reading and Learning Group through the Hospital for Sick Children. Gemma was born to teach, with great compassion, good humour, and an unparalleled ability to light even the darkest room. She was the life of the party, the first to laugh, and always the last to cease smiling. It is with these memories that Gemma will be always remembered and greatly missed.
Gemma’s family appreciates the compassionate care and support she received from her medical team through the progression of her illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gemma’s memory to the Sick Kids Empower Reading program or the Walk to End ALS.
