George was born on October 31, 1932, in the village of Anikkad, Kerala, India. He was the eldest child and eldest son of Chacko and Aley (née Munjanat) Madapallimattam, and a beloved brother to six siblings.
Academically gifted from an early age, George earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the age of 18 and later completed a Bachelor of Education degree. After a brief teaching career in Kerala, George left home in 1958 to continue his studies and pursue new opportunities in the United States. He completed two additional Master's degrees in Science and Education at DePaul University in Chicago. During his career in Biochemistry, George had 17 publications in peer reviewed journals, and presented many posters at conferences. Although he strongly considered pursuing a PhD, he chose instead to devote his time and energy to supporting his family.
During his time studying in Chicago, George formed many lifelong friendships and enjoyed traveling extensively and socializing with friends. He later returned to Kerala, where he married Annie Vettamvely. Soon afterward, they moved to Chicago to begin their family and careers, eventually relocating to Canada, where they made their home for the remainder of their lives together.
George and Annie both enjoyed long and distinguished careers in biochemistry research at the University of Toronto. Together they raised two children, James and Liza, and were blessed with four grandchildren.
Before illness limited his activities, George was an avid gardener who enjoyed Indian films and music, keeping informed about local and world events, and spending time with friends and neighbours.
George was a loving and devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his intellect, perseverance, humility, warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. His family asks that he be remembered as he was in his prime: engaged, accomplished, curious, and surrounded by family and friends.
He will be deeply missed.
May he rest in comfort and eternal peace.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, with prayers and speeches at 7:00 pm.
A funeral service will take place at St. David's Parish at 9:00 am on Saturday, October 24, 2026, followed by internment.
