Peacefully at his residence at the Gibson Retirement Home. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Winifred Beatrice Medland Hawks. Survived by his devoted children Tom and Sally Hawks (Ralph Anzarouth). Loved dearly by his grandchildren, Gordon Thomson Hawks (Stephanie Gloyn), Heather Hawks-Dennig (Ken), Ian James Hawks, and Emily Victoria and David Frederick Anzarouth of Ottawa. Cherished uncle of nieces Sheila Holmes Hawks, Helen Roby Brryce (Douglas), Virginia Medland Green (Paul), and nephew David Lane Roby (Loretta) of Vermont.
Gordon was born in Walton-on-Thames, England and moved with his family to Toronto in 1919. He attended Brown Public School, North Toronto Collegiate, and Trinity College at U of T before medical school. After graduating, he joined the Royal Canadian Medical Corps in 1943 and served as Captain until the end of WWII. He practiced bacteriology at the Banting Institute before taking up the position of Head of Microbiology at St. Michael’s Hospital until his retirement in 1980. He was a favourite professor for many years at the University of Toronto Medical School. Gordon loved music, gardening and oil painting, was devoted to his family and many friends, and was a most honourable son, husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He will be missed by all who knew him and our world is diminished today by his passing. A Service of Celebration and Remembrance will be held at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St, Toronto on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 10am. Interment at Park Lawn Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael’s Hospital.
