September 20, 1955 - June 27, 2026
It is with sadness we announce the passing of our dear sister and aunt, Mary.
Mary was born and raised in Don Mills, the second of seven children born to Marjorie and Colin MacKenzie. In an active household of mostly boys Mary was a strong and determined presence. From her earliest days she exhibited the athletic and artistic skills that she carried throughout her life. The first in her family to go away to university, Mary graduated with a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo in 1979 followed by a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto.
Mary started her teaching career in private schools, and in Vancouver and Guelph before landing at the Toronto District School Board in the late 1980’s. Mary was a mathematics and computer science teacher who excelled at bringing creativity to the classroom and putting her students first. Retiring from Albert Campbell Collegiate in Scarborough in 2019, Mary was delighted to celebrate the school’s 50th Anniversary with former students and colleagues just a few weeks ago. It can’t help but be noted that Mary left us at the very end of a school year.
As an early adapter to the condo lifestyle, Mary was a resident of the Beaches neighborhood for over 35 years. She was a regular in “her” seat at The Fox Theatre, put in many miles on the boardwalk in all seasons and took part in the Masters Swimming club at the Summerville pool during the summer. She took part in many art clubs, language groups, and choirs over the years and remained active in civic affairs throughout. Despite being something of a nervous flyer, Mary spent many summer weeks in Italy, England and Scotland as well as travelling Canada by rail.
Mary was a proud and generous aunt, great-aunt and sister and, aided by her exceptional memory, the glue who held the family together. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all.
The entire family expresses our gratitude for the care and kindness shown to Mary by her neighbors, cousins, friends and the Palliative Teams at Mt Sinai and Sunnybrook Hospitals.
