Paul Augustus Mason

Paul Mason passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94 years with his loving wife Veronica by his side. Paul is survived by his wife of 70 years, Veronica, and their four sons, Andrew (Lisa), Graham (Terry), Malcolm (Kelly), and Adrian, as well as eight loving grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is predeceased by his siblings (in Kent, England); Les, Peter, Horace, Anita (Toronto), and Chris. He will be dearly missed by his relatives in England, including his sister Sheila, nieces Debra, Anita, and Tracey, nephews Paul and Nigel (Australia) and sisters-in-law Jean and Maria.

Paul was born April 7th, 1932 in Newcastle, England, the fourth of seven children of Horace and Ethel Mason. The family moved to Kent just before the Second World War, but Paul was evacuated during the war and did not return to Kent until 1944. Paul left school at 15 years of age and began a seven-year apprenticeship as an electrician. During this time, he was a member of the Medway Wheelers cycling club, where he participated in many competitions and won several awards. Seeking a better life than the one he foresaw in England, he immigrated to Canada in 1954.

Early in 1956, he met Veronica, and as he says, “found what happiness meant.” Four years later, they had their first child and began the family that meant so much to them for the rest of their lives. Paul switched careers from electrical work to sales, and found a second love in the masonry industry. He started his own company in 1959, which grew and prospered under his leadership. Paul oversaw the expansion of the business from very humble beginnings to an organization that has become a fixture in the Toronto construction industry. His good nature, kindness, and concern for others are remembered by all who had the good fortune to meet him.

Paul was a passionate traveller on the road of life, always interested in others and their stories, and always ready for a new adventure. He loved spending time at the family cottage (which he built himself), as well as travelling the world with his wife and friends. This included years of travel to Destin, Florida in the colder months which gained him another group of friends. Paul seemed to make new friends wherever he went. He enjoyed golf, and had a deep appreciation for wine. He saw wine as a metaphor for life, and enjoyed collecting, gifting and drinking wine with others.

Paul’s main love was his family, which he nurtured and guided throughout his life. He lived life to the fullest, and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, gentleness, and compassion.

Paul’s family would like to express his heartfelt thanks to Niña, Edgard and Maydee whose loving care in the last few years warmed his heart.
