Five years have passed since Verdell went home to the Lord, yet his kindness continues to echo in our lives. We miss his gentle spirit and unwavering support, especially in how he faithfully lifted us up in prayer as missionaries of The Peoples Church. His legacy of compassion and intercession remains a guiding light in our journey.

My heart is broken at this news.  I cannot fully embrace it so I can only imagine how you and the boys are. 

Heaven has received an angel to itself.  Our loss, heaven’s gain.  Working with Verdell at Peoples was a gift that many of us received. He was gentle, unassuming, gracious and kind.  A wonderful colleague who loved Christ with all his heart and was full of passion for others to know Him. 

There is no doubt the joy he felt in meeting you Gina. You put a special twinkle in his eye. I was truly happy he had found such joy in meeting you.  I also really enjoyed Verdell’s writing skills and the calm presence he brought to any room.  We shared a jovial work bond and I’m truly saddened to know he’s left this world so young, and way too soon.  

One of my favourite memories was when he shared at a devotion about his love for spending time with God on the east coast - a point where he would sit and look out across the ocean and realize that as far as the eye could see it was only him and God and the horizon. It was a powerful moment and I’m sure I haven’t done it justice here, but needless to say it brought out Verdell’s depth of soul and ability to ponder on things of God in a deep manner.  

As hard as it is to fathom this loss, I wanted you to know  that you have the support and prayers of many, including me.  I know you will let your boys remember him and I pray for your daily strength to make it through. May Jesus comfort and keep you and may you remember that - precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of His saints - somehow Verdell is in those everlasting arms with the same twinkle in his eyes.

Verdell was instrumental in my First Nations ministry training in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

With that training I had a better understanding of how to reach the Native people and introduce them to the real Jesus who loved them and was angry that they suffered abuse at the hands of "Christians".

One lady I led to the Lord asked me afterward what happens when people die who don't know Jesus.  I explained "The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord".  

She encouraged me to befriend people at the Native Centre.

A couple years later at her funeral  the salvation message was presented clearly at her insistence by her niece who unbeknownst to me was a pastor!

I thank God for Verdell's influence on me!

I remember the time Verdell invited my boss and myself to join him and his secretary to go out for lunch on Secretaries Day.

The last time I saw Verdell was when we both ended up on the same Spadina streetcar in March of this year.   We had a good catch-up conversation.

I cannot express how sorry I am for your loss.  Verdell was such a wonderful man.  His gentleness and kindness touched everyone around him.   He is so missed.

I had the pleasure of working together with Verdell, and others, to create the Missions Hub.  It was a wonderful challenge, and a great opportunity for all of us to see Verdell’s gifts in action.  Verdell had such a calming presence.  He was clearly a leader, and led quietly and patiently.  He could see gaps in opinions or approaches, and was able to bridge them beautifully.  He could also carry vision and get the resources in place to see it through.  I thank God that Verdell
so faithfully used his gifts to serve the Church.

Verdell lived for God.  He also lived for you Gina, David and Joshua.  He spoke so lovingly of you Gina, and was always sharing stories about you David.  He was so proud of you and we could all see how much he adored you both.  Joshua, your Dad was so excited for you to be his son.  I can still remember the prayer update that he sent out announcing that you were legally part of the family- he was so excited.

We are praying deeply for all of you in this incredibly hard time.  We have every confidence that Verdell is with Jesus, and that he will be waiting for you with open arms in Heaven.  But we cannot imagine how painful it is for all of you at this time.  Please know that we love you all, and that we would be honoured to help if there is a way you would like us to.

I so appreciated getting to know Verdell and working with him as a colleague in OMF.   He had a Pastor's heart to listen, encourage and empathize with others.  He thought through things and wasn't afraid to express his convictions.  He had a heart for all people to know Jesus.  He lived his life with purpose and passion and was a wonderful example to us.  His love for his family was evident often and we saw him make them a priority in his life.  I appreciated his gentle manner, his laugh and remember him with his coffee cup always in hand.  I am remembering and praying for you, Gina, and your boys.

Verdell was a boss who showed me what it means to care about his employees.  Although I was doing writing for him and only part time, he always checked in and cared about me and my studies and where God was leading.
He also taught me so many things about missions, how to walk alongside agencies, what the church could do to help agencies and support missionaries better. How to steward people's money. 
And I took all this with me when I left - and now and am ministry myself and  realize even more how much he taught me.

Verdell glowed when he talked about his family and he was so thrilled when God brought Joshua to join David in your home.   It’s hard to imagine them now without their precious father but they have so much to be proud of in Verdell.   He lived every moment with a passion for God’s glory and a compassion for those who did not know that glory, or the freedom and joy that a living relationship with Christ brings.   Verdell was a Watchman on the walls, a voice crying out the good news of Jesus.   His death too soon (at least from our limited perspective) reminds us all to make every moment count for eternity.   "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms"  (Deuteronomy 33: 27).

I know what you are feeling as I just lost my sister Rosalind on March 15th. To lose 2 family members within 2 months is numbing to my spirit but What a Day It Is! Sheldon's Jesus He is Seeing, He is Looking Upon His Face the One Who Saved him By His Grace. He is Taking him by the Hand and Leading him through the Promised Land, What a Day for Verdell! Oh My! What We are Missing here on earth, He is Gaining in Heaven!

Verdell was an awesome student-athlete while at BMC.  To further read about his accomplishments as an adult is awe inspiring. What a testimony for the glory of God!

So very sorry to hear of Verdell’s passing.  Sending our prayers to you during this time of sorrow. 

I am very shocked and saddened to hear of Verdell's death. For his family,wife and young children I pray that God will comfort you in your grief. and fill your hearts with the assurance that He is with you during this storm.I was privileged  to have worked with him at TPC several years ago.

We are in shock as well to hear of our dear brother Verdell’s unexpected passing. He was a committed advocate and mobilizer for global missions, a great colleague, and a valued part of our wider Canadian missions family. 
In such a time of deep grief and questions, may the Lord give His perfect comfort and peace to Gina, the boys, and the rest of the family.  Verdell is Home with Jesus, but his absence here will leave such an empty place for everyone who loved him.  Mourning here, but through tears we can say, “He lives! To Him be the glory - and one Day, together again!”

We were in total shock to hear the news of Verdell's passing.  We admired him very much especially in the joy he took in sharing about his family. the leadership gifting he had, the pleasure of working together we had and the passion he had for God's world. He will be dearly missed by  us, but much more so by Gina and the boys and the rest of his their family. We are praying and will continue to do so. May God give peace, comfort and provision

I had the privilege to work with Verdell at Living Truth Peoples church over 10 years ago. He was a kind, humble and wonderful person. A caring man that made himself available to God to be used mightily for the kingdom. I am so sorry for the loss.
