

Jack Hayse Johnston, Jr., born in Eldorado, Arkansas on October 15, 1924 passed away at home on Friday, June 3, 2011. Jack graduated from Tyler High School, where he as on the all-district football team two year and the all-state football team in 1941. He played football at Southern Methodist University in 1942 before he volunteered in the Marine Reserve and served 38 months, 19 months of which was in the Central Pacific during World War II. Jack returned to Tyler to marry his wife of 66 years, Esma Owens Johnston, who preceded him in death on November 2, 2010.
Jack and Esma were members of Marvin Methodist Church and the Crusaders Class since July 14, 1946. He was the Boy Scout Master for the Marvin troop for a number of years and active with his wife in all the children’s church activities. One of his biggest accomplishments was becoming a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and member of Sharon Temple Shriners in Tyler.
During his career, Jack worked for W.A. Brookshire’s, Ideal Bread Company, and owned his own Exxon Service Station for numerous years. He then went on to be a car dealer at Richardson Ford before retiring.
He was a huge Texas Rangers fan and was thrilled they made it to the 2010 World Series.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Jack H. Johnston, Sr. and Cora Johnston; and his son Jack Wayne Johnston. He is survived by his stepmother, Louise Johnston, of Midland; daughter Sue Kerr, and grandson Kristopher Kerr both of Austin. Also daughter-in-law JoAnna Johnston of Euless; grandson Michael W. Johnston and wife Tracey of Plano, and grandson Mark H. Johnston, wife Tracy and great-grandson Alexander “AJ” Johnston of Frisco.
Visitation will be Monday, June 6, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Lloyd James Funeral Home Chapel and interment at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler. In lieu of flowers donations maybe made to Marvin United Methodist Church, Crusaders Class, Tyler, Texas or Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd, Ste 100, Austin, TX 78759. The family would like to thank all the Hospice Austin staff, especially his hospice nurse Rochelle and caregiver Rynna, for their continuous support during the last few three months.
