I   FIRST MET JIM IN NACOGDOCHES,  TEXAS.  WE WERE ATTENDING CHURCH TOGETHER AT THE MASTERS WORD CHURCH WHERE SONNY BURNS WAS THE PASTOR.
I WAS AY HIS FIRST WEDDING. JIM, SUNNY, FRED, AND I, ALONG WITH AFEW OTHERS,  
SPENT HOURS PLAYING ANC SINGING IN THE BACK ROOM OF SUNNYS GUITAR STORE.  IWENT TO AUSTIN IN 1986 AND SHARED A HOUSE WITH JIM AND OSCAR HERNÁNDEZ. 
I WAS, AND STILL AM, DEEPLY  SADDENDED WHEN I FOUND OUT YESRS LATTER OF HIS PASSING. I HAVE SOME OF HIS RECORDINGS,  AND WILLING TO SHARE WITH THE FAMILY.  I LIVE IN SALADO,TEXAS. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS. 

I met Jim in Tyler in 1998. He was playing guitar at Armadilla Willy's and I fell in love with his voice.  He really knew how to "sang a song", as us country people say.  I saw him off and on over the years to come, but time and miles took me away.  Jim loved his family dearly and spoke of them often.Jim loved playing guitar and writing 100's of songs, which he said came to him in the middle of night most of the time.He was crazy about guns and showed his collection off quite frequently. He loved the movie "Tombstone" and we watched it often. We would put on country music and dance all around the living room floor. No one could tell a good joke like Jim Collum. His sense of humour was contagious.  I was so saddened when I saw online today that my dear friend had passed away last year.  I cannot imagine the sense of loss you, as his family, must have.  All I know is that Jim wanted to be a lawyer and give back to others.  It seems that was exactly what he did.  Gave his life to service of others.  I will miss you dearly my sweet friend.  My thoughts and prayers go out to each of you.

I fell out of touch with my dear friend, Jim.  Life took me on a different path.  Jim and I were in the Police Academy together in San Marcos at the SouthWest Texas Law Enforcement Academy.  Always the songster, Jim wrote a song about the Academy.  He and I sung it at our graduation ceremony.  To this day, I can still remember most of the words.  We remained close friends until I took a position as a Federal officer that moved me all over the U.S. and outside of it.  I was listening to a Country song today and the voice reminded me of the way Jim and I used to sing.  I started a search and found that Jim passed a year ago today.  I decided to post this after I was able to stop crying.  I missed out on a lot of time with a dear friend...and let it slip away until it was too late.  I will mourn his passing, offer a prayer for his soul, and wish my deepest condolences to his family.

Velma, I send my most sincere condolences on the loss of a fine son.  Jim and I were roommates when we both worked for the State of Texas in 1983 in Austin. You and your whole family are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and always. I am the one who taught him how to sing in Spanish. We had a lot of good memories together. Velma we will miss Jim.  You have been a wonderful mother.  He loved his mother and family so very much.  He is with the Lord.  Many times we studied and prayed together, laughed and joked.  Jim was especially protective and instructive to my children. Jim educated my sons on construction techniques while they helped Jim and his many friends build his lake house.  His many friends will miss him.  He, first and foremost, is a Christian.  He served and loved his Lord and his country and was there for us when we needed help. We love Jim!
