As we laid you to rest on Thursday I thought of all the things I could or would want to say. Though you left such an impact on us all there are no words to describe your grace and how much you were loved.
Abuela you came to this strange and foreign county at age 14. NYC was your first stop with its city lights and chaos. You decided to return to your beloved Cuba and return to the US married as an adult with Abuelo, mom, tio Juan, and tio Alex after winning the lottery to leave the county. This was no monetary lottery but a lottery of opportunity to escape a bleak future and communist grounds. You were given just a short amount of time to leave your property to the government and take any belongings you could carry along with you on the flight. Abuelo paid what was left of his earnings to the cab driver in order to board a flight that would pave the way for future generations to come.
With nothing more than a suitcase of clothes and some personal belongings you brought your family to a country of opportunity. Language barriers, a change of scenery, and cultural changes ensued. Yet you still acclimated to the changes and sought work as a seamstress and provided for your family. Though you only had a grammar school education level I was always fascinated by how tech savvy you truly were. Always recording music, making CDs for everyone, or bootlegging our favorite movies lol (Sandlot, Three Ninja, etc.). You were truly ahead of your time and loved to do DIY projects around your home. Our very own Bob Villa. Always changing out your wall paper, tiles, or backsplash. You loved to sing and dance and brag about how many grandchildren and great grandchildren you had.
Though with old age some become cynical and mean you stayed true to yourself. You remained kind and gentle. You would always give away items to neighbors, buy presents for your doctors, and their office staff. Even when you didn’t have anything to give you still found a way to provide to others ❤️ Mely
