Obituary of Mary T. Lombardi

Mary T. Lombardi, 91, of Hawthorne, NJ and formerly of Little Ferry, NJ, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2022 just days before her 92nd birthday. Born in Union City, NJ, Mary was the third child of the late Charles and Rose (Burke) Sherman. Mary’s siblings who have predeceased her are Violet Kelly, Charles Sherman, William Sherman, Peter (“Leo”) Sherman, Donald Sherman, Elizabeth Diaz/Lennard, and Louis (“Magee”) Avella. She is also predeceased by her stepfather, Louis Avella. Mary’s surviving sibling is her sister, Rosemary Labida (nee Avella). Mary spent her early adult life as a secretary working in New York City. She was a homemaker who in later years worked part time as a researcher for out-of-print books. She loved spending time with her family, reading, bingo and playing slots in Atlantic City. Mary is predeceased by her husband John B. Lombardi. She will be missed by her children, John F. Lombardi of North Bergen, NJ, whose wife Janice predeceased her, her daughter Barbara and her husband Declan Moynihan of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, her son William (“Billy”) Lombardi and his wife Donna of Eugene, Oregon, her daughter Jan O’Brus of Las Vegas, Nevada and her daughter, Carol and her husband Rob Pitaccio of Hawthorne, NJ. Mary was the proud Nana of 13 grandchildren: John, Jamie (Giornalista) and Joseph Lombardi, Bobby Newcomb and Jessica Murphy, Shannon (Haggarty), Bryan and Kyle Lombardi, Frank Moran, Rayann O’Brus, Ashley Haas, Amanda Sullivan and Victoria Sullivan. These wonderful grandchildren gave Mary the joy of 12 great-grandchildren. Recently, Mary moved to live with her daughter and her family in Hawthorne. There, Mary loved the companionship of the family dog, Skye, and cats Chesney, Moo and Sammy. Visitation will be on Monday, August 8th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Boulevard, Union City, NJ. A funeral prayer service will be offered on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Mary will be laid to rest at Flower Hill Cemetery Mausoleum, 5433 Kennedy Boulevard, North Bergen. Mary had deep religious faith in St. Jude.
