Alfred Aaron Wiley, also known as Sonny, Ted, Al, Daddy, and Grandpa, was a unique man. He moved from Ballinger to east San Antonio when he was about 9 years old. He attended Smith Elementary School where he met Jimmy Wolf across the fence at St. George Catholic School next door. Alfred and Jimmy remained lifelong friends, marrying within a week of each other, having children 2 months apart, and working at the Borden Company until retirement. When Alfred played drums in a band, he met Johanna Riedel, who was there with friends. He asked her to dance and found the love of his life. They were married in June of 1951, had Alana Sue in 1952 and Jannalyn in 1953. They had a great life in Selma, Texas, with a cabin at Medina Lake where they went practically every weekend from 1957 until 1970. At Medina, he, Johanna, and friends built a cabin that accommodated at least 12, and many weekends, it was full. The fun abounded with water sports, barbeques, laughter, and camaraderie. Alfred was an accomplished water skier, who, with Johanna, was willing to teach anyone how to ski. Alfred was one of those guys who wasn’t afraid to try anything. His dad, Grayson Wiley, taught him carpentry skills, which he used throughout his adult life, building the foundation for a little 2-bedroom house in Selma, and then building an entire house where he lived 50 years. He taught himself how to weld, making all sorts of things like wagon wheel gates for the homestead and repairing just about anything. He was a servant at heart, helping his friends and family. He built room additions, houses, just about anything. Sometimes, the expenses came out of his own pocket, and he didn't ask for any compensation - except maybe a cup of coffee. He was kind and an awesome dad and role model for anyone who crossed his path. He loved his family, Alana Woods and Jannalyn and Julian Welch, and he would do anything for them. He loved his four grandchildren, Jason and Jerry Welch, Kaycie Tyler, and Lee Andrew Woods IV, and his eight great grandchildren, Matt, Grace, Jack, Jacy and Haly Welch; Roc and Rex Tyler, and Katherine Villarreal.
Father of all, we pray to You for Alfred and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May his soul and the soul of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
