Betty was brought into this world, in Bradenton, Florida on March 18th, 1928 to her parents, Casper H. and Emmaline Francis (nee:Mattison) Roper. Growing up in Honea Path, S.C. and Bradenton, where she attended Manatee High School, Betty graduated in 1946. During the war years, Betty became acquainted with the word "TRAVEL". As a young girl, Betty traveled to different locations in the south with her mother, father, and younger sister, Nancy, as her father worked in construction, building military camps. The word TRAVEL appealed to Betty evidently, because after graduating from Manatee High, Betty sought employment with the FBI in Washington, D.C. In June, 1947, Betty eloped to Georgia to marry her favorite Manatee High school football player, Edgar (Ed) W. Jordan. Being a couple of years older than Betty, Ed had served in the Merchant Marines during the war and in 1951; Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, again getting Betty into a TRAVEL mode. They moved to various military bases during his military career. These included places like Denver, Colorado; Anchorage, Alaska;, Tainan, Taiwan (Formosa); Marysville, California; and Rome, New York. Ed retired from the military in 1970 and he and Betty returned to their hometown of Bradenton where they built a home and bought an RV so they could resume travels. Ed preceded Betty in death in February, 1999. Betty stayed in Bradenton, taking care of her aging mother and working for various companies, including Burdines-Macy's from which she retired in June, 1997.
On June 27th, 2005, Betty remarried, this time to Richard (Dick) Schutte, whom she and Ed had met while stationed in Taiwan in 1961. Ed and Betty remained
close friends with Dick and his wife, Dorothy throughout their military careers. During their 11 years of marriage, Betty and Dick continued their love for travel and seeing new places. They toured many of the western states, visiting National Parks and towns, such as Sedona, Arizona and Zion National Park, the two places Betty thought were the most beautiful. They also took many cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean in addition to visiting the countries of Costa Rico, Panama, and Columbia. Betty is survived by her husband Richard; her sister Nancy Davidson (Donald Davidson) of Treasure Island, Fl.; Her niece, Deborah Williams (Ray Williams) of Land 0 Lakes, Fl.; her nephew, Alan Davidson (Beth Davidson) of Plant City, FL; six grand- nieces, two. great-grand-nieces and a great-grand-nephew.
