David Essenpreis passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024 in San Antonio. He was 97. He was born in Highland, IL to Bertha and Gustave Essenpreis where he lived until graduation in 1944. He immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific. Upon returning to Highland, he met and married the love of his life, Carol, and they were happily married for 68 years. They had one daughter, Robin, who was the “apple of her daddy’s eye.” His entire work career was in the data processing field in civil service for the U.S. Air Force Manpower & Personnel Center at Randolph AFB. He received many performance awards, his favorite being named “Outstanding Civilian in the Air Force” by the Air Force Association.
He is a member of Windcrest United Methodist Church, Davy Crockett Masonic Lodge, Gear Grinders car club, a former member of Alamo Square & Round Dance Assn and a former Windcrest Volunteer firefighter. He also served on numerous Windcrest City committees. He was an avid car buff and “shadetree mechanic” and a friend to everyone he met.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, daughter, Robin Hill (Jay), grandchildren Pierce Gibson, SJ, Chaney Hill (Jackson Zerr), Jayson Hill (Annette), Lindsey Marek (Kurt) and great-grandchildren Kayson Marek, Macie Jo Marek and Kannon Hill.
Services will be held at Windcrest United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 9th at 10:00, followed by burial at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter #3 at 2:15 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Windcrest United Methodist Church or to the National WW II Museum.
