Ed Maloof was my Managerial Accounting instructor at UTSA.  He was one of the most memorable instructors I have EVER had!  He had this habit of asking you a question relating to the subject matter.   If you answered it right, oh boy!..  you were in for it!  He would ask a follow up question, trying to trip you.  If you answered the second question right, he would follow up with another question... but he would add a lot more data and information that seemed relevant to the question, but was nothing but a distraction or irrelevant information.   If you answered that third question right, he would challenge your answer, your logic, your understanding of it, with several more questions.
This would go on for 5 to 7 questions.  He wanted to make sure you thoroughly understood the subject matter.  That even if seemingly relevant information was thrown in the equation, your knowledge of the matter would cast that nonsense aside and evaluate only the accurate, relevant question.
I miss that man.  A man who made the questions grueling (he did offer the ability to "opt out" of the questioning if you wanted to), yet made you look forward to that class.  If you wanted to play ball with him in class, you better do your homework, understand the material, master it, and be ready to take the heat! To stand alone, in front of all your classmates, and not only take on Maloof, but prove your point!
A great way of teaching!  What a way to prep you for real life!
So, Mr. Maloof, if there is a way you can read this...  thank you, sir.  Thank you for being willing to pay the price of extra effort, care, work, and mental strain, to train you students thoroughly.  Thank you for respecting the teaching position and understanding in your heart that you were not only teaching students, you were preparing future businessmen, industry leaders, husbands, wives, fathers, and grandfathers for the real challenge of life!
And sorry for not telling you this in person...

I took nearly all my accounting courses from Mr. Maloof at UTSA in the mid-1980s.  It was, by far, my best experience in the business school there--I will always remember his Socratic teaching method.  It worked for me--I had a successful career in corporate accounting at USAA.  Sorry I did not have time to thank him for his good work.  My belated condolences to his family.  (Coincidentally, I grew up in a military family, with several assignments at Randolph/Universal City in the 60s and 70s.)

So sorry for your loss. Mr Maloof was my favorite teacher ever and taught me more about life than anyone else. I think of him often and all of his sayings. 

I was an accounting student at UTSA in the 1980’s.  Professor Maloof was an excellent teacher.  He challenged me and developed my love of accounting.  I have taught various courses over the years and I have tried to emulate his approach.  He had a profound impact on my career.

I was an accounting student at UTSA in the  90's. Mr Maloof was the BEST Accounting professor.  He helped foster my love for the profession. 



I was just thinking of Uncle Ed today, I loved when he came to visit us in Scotland, we had so many great debates about the world, and how he managed to walk about in Glasgow in his shorts in our famous Scottish weather ??My Mum and Dad had many visits to Texas to see him and Aunt Shirley, Uncle Ed always had a full itinerary  for them and they came home with so many stories and photographs of where they had visited.

I was one of his accounting students at UTSA. I took intermediate accounting from him. It was truly the class that separated the men from the boys. 

He was an excellent teacher and linked accounting to the real world. He also shared a truth that was so valuable.  Have an emergency savings account.  A way to ensure that if ethics or mortgage payment were competing, there would be funds for both. 

I was one of his many accounting students at UTSA way back in the early 90s.     I never forgot his name and it popped in my head today for some reason.   I googled and so here I am  leaving much belated condolences.    May he continue to Rest In Peace.  

We enjoyed Ed’s friendship and chatting with him at the gym. His stories, humor and knowledge were very interesting. Always a smile and pleasant greeting. We are so sorry for your loss. We miss him too.
