JL was a loving, caring, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. JL was preceded in death by his father JC Lawson, his mother Georgia Lee Payne Lawson, his sister Frances Cook White, and his daughter Gwendolyn Annette Lawson. He was survived by his wife Yong Suk Lawson, his son William J Lawson, his siblings Freddy Jewel Lawson, Melissa Venetia Lawson, Sharon LeNell Lawson English, Jeffery Allen Lawson, and his grandchildren Alexander JL Lawson and Hannah Lawson Cruz.
He was a proud soldier of the United States Army with over 20 years of service. In addition to his service in the Army, he had the honor to give over 25 years of service to the Live Oak Police Department. JL was a strong-willed man, who had love and appreciation for everyone he had the pleasure to meet and know. Everyone he met along his journey can say he was a man of honor and integrity. He never backed away from a problem, but faced it head on, believing it’s better to face the problem than avoid it and cause further damage.
He was a simple man; it didn’t take much to make him happy and usually it was the small things that brightened up his day. In his free time, he could be found at home with his wife, spending time with his family, or fixing up his cars. While most would think spending one’s free time fixing a car to be stressful, it was something that had no stress attached to it for him. It was enjoyable for him to fix up engines and refurbish cars, as it was like art to him, and he was able to find some great friends along the way to share this passion with.
He was an all-in kind of man, whether it was trying to help take care of his daughter when she was sick or appearing at his children and grandchildren’s extracurricular activities; he always showed up with a bright smile. He loved being present and showing up as their #1 supporter, even if it was just a small occasion. JL was exceptionally proud of his family’s successes and efforts to be better people. Although he has passed, he continues to live through his wife, son, and grandchildren. He is a hard man to forget, and his legacy will continue to live on through the generations.
The family would like to give special thanks for Tony Lara from Colonial Funeral Home, The Live Oak Police Dept, The Converse Police Dept, and The Patriot Guard Riders. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial contribution to a charity of your choice in memory of JL Lawson.
