John was born May 1, 1930, in Russellville, AL. to Chester C. Jackson and Mattie Lee Hawkins. John grew up on a farm near Jasper, AL and as a teenager worked in the coal mines nearby; as soon as he was of age he joined the United States Army. John built a military career which spanned twenty-seven years and cumulated in his retirement in 1977 in Ft. Hood, TX.
While in the army, John was awarded: The National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stripes, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea) the Army Commendation Medal, the German Army MM Award in Bronze, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star.
After retiring from the army, John went on to establish the John Jackson Realty Company. In 1951, John married Rose Marie Southard in Okinawa, Japan. The couple raised six children until Rose’s death in 1986. John later married Josefina Torres Quintanilla in 1987 gaining three sons. John and Josefina remained married until John’s death. John is survived by his wife Josefina T. Jackson and nine children: Rosalee M. Cunningham of Killeen, TX; J. Dianne (Douglas) Hafeman of Kimball, NE.; Jettie E. (James) Ebbenga of Waldorf, MN.; John D. (Treasa) Jackson Jr.; Wanda J. Landis, of Columbus OH; Christopher W. Jackson of Woodstock GA; Jessie S. (Candace) Quintanilla of Spring, TX; Jaime (Lora) Quintanilla of Brownfield, TX; and Joseph Quintanilla of Nash, TX. John leaves behind his legacy in his twenty-five grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. He is survived by a brother Chester C. (Judy) Jackson of Tucson, AZ, and a sister Peggy (Dal) Berry of Dallas, TX, and a nephew Owen (Kathy) Pharr of Huntsville, AL. John was preceded in death by his first wife Rose M. Jackson, Brother J.B. Jackson and a sister Elizabeth Reeves.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday May 14, 2012 at 4:00 pm at St. Monica Catholic Church 501 North Street, Converse, Texas. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, TX from 9:30 to 11:30 AM with a service to follow at 11:30 AM. The internment will be 1:30 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzback Road, San Antonio, TX.
