Margie Ruth Smith

Margie Ruth Smith, 84, departed this life on July 31, 2015. She was born on August 27, 1930 in Woodville, Texas to Alberta “Nan” Barlow Gregory. She was married to Emerson Alton Smith who preceded her in death. At 8 years of age, Margie united with Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was baptized. She started playing the piano at age 9 and played for her first choir at age 11. Margie attended Scott High School in Woodville, TX and graduated in 1947. She studied Cosmetology at Wiley College in Marshall, TX. Upon completion, she started her Hair Stylist business. She participated as a Teacher’s Aide at Scott High where she helped organize the first band. In 1948, she wrote most of the words to the Scott High School song that was used until the school name was changed in 1968. After faithful service in the Woodville community, Margie relocated to San Antonio, TX where she united with the Rock of Faith Baptist Church. She later changed her membership to Emmanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Stennish Edwards where she served as the musician until death. Margie has one deceased son, Michael Smith-Gregory and is survived by 4 children, Charles Smith (Mary) of Beaumont, TX, Sundra Smith of Arlington, TX, Danny Smith of Lufkin, TX & Karen Haynes (Chris) of Schertz, TX, 7 grand children, 10 great-grand children, host of other relatives and friends.
