

Mildred was born on December 17th, 1926 in Carbondale, Illinois. She was active, witty, curious, and could carry on an easy conversation with anyone. She loved literature and was an avid and skilled writer. She worked in many areas of journalism and communications including writing, photography. advertising, editing, publications management, and communications student advisement. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the University of Washington and a Master of Arts Degree in Journalism from Southern Illinois University.
Besides being a lover of books, Mildred enjoyed music, writing, travel, flying, and genealogical research. Her love of flying led her to meet and marry PFC Robert Collett, who was in the Army-Air Corps, in Gulfport, Mississippi in 1946. From there they started a family and began four decades of travel to wherever her husband's military and post-military career took them, including Illinois, Texas, Idaho, Guam, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Washington state.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Collett and a sister, Sue Fraley. She is survived by her sister Carolyn Menendez, her children, Robert Collett, Jr., Susan Collett, Jean Taylor-Payne, Katherine Collett Root, and James Collett, plus five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, January 23rd at 4 pm at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City, Texas. A graveside service will be at 9:30 am on Tuesday, January 24th at the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
