

Mrs. Wyvon Ruth Ross Nelson, age 79 of Schertz, Texas passed away May 22, 2013 quietly at home. Wyvon was born October 23, 1933 to Julius Ross and Lillie (Officer) Ross in Fay, Oklahoma. Wyvon made a profession of faith in Christ early in life at the Sunrise Baptist Church in her hometown. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Enid, Oklahoma. 57 years ago on September 23, 1955 Wyvon married Oliver Nelson. Wyvon worked in the grocery and banking industries during the early years of their marriage when they settled in Danville, Illinois. She fulfilled her passion as a homemaker for over 50 years cooking and gardening, while extending hospitality to family, neighbors and friends. Reading was a favorite pastime. During nearly 20 years of residence in Danville, she was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Batestown. Since moving to Texas, she worshipped as a long time member of Resurrection Baptist Church in Schertz, where she participated in the Birthday Club, and the SALT (seniors) Ministry. Wyvon is survived by her husband, Oliver Nelson; daughter, Danita Nelson of Austin, Texas; and stepson, Oliver Buford (Evelyn) of Danville, Illinois; grandchildren Schuyler Nelson-Brown of Austin, Texas and Ivy Love (Dwight) of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren Donovan and Iyana Love. Siblings include: Joy Jones of Watonga, Oklahoma, Bishop Robert D. Ross (Elder Shirley) of Chesapeake, Virginia, Henry Ross (Louisa) of Phoenix, Arizona, Julius Ross (Sha`ron) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Thurman Ross of Geary, Oklahoma, Bethel R. Ogden (James) of Columbus, Ohio, Herman Ross of Lynnwood, Washington, Joel E. Ross (Darlene) of Watonga, Oklahoma, and Larry Ross (Renee) of Watonga, Oklahoma. She is also survived by one Aunt, Alberta Neal from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A host of nieces, nephews and dear friends remain to mourn her loss. Wyvon is preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Lillie Ross; daughter, Robin Lorraine Nelson; brother, Sherman Smart; and sister, Evelyn Ross. Special thanks from the family to Resurrection Baptist Church, Heart to Heart Hospice and reverend Lydia Hernandez. Pallbearers will be provided by Tuskegee Airmen and the deacon Board at Resurrection Baptist Church. Her brothers will serve as honorary pallbearers. A visitation will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Colonial Funeral Home. A Celebration Service will be Friday, May 31, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Resurrection Baptist Church, 1002 Live Oak Road, Schertz, Texas 78154. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
