

He was born to the late C.E. and Agnes Kermon Hughes, in Rocky Mount, NC on July 23, 1934.
He attended Atlantic Christian College (currently named Barton College) in Wilson, NC, where he met his wife Carol of 53 ½ years, of Fort Worth, TX. He received his Masters at the University of Virginia. He and his wife have lived in Virginia Beach, VA since 1960.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Austin Hughes, his four children, Kelli Hughes McFerrin, Daniel Edward Hughes(Lisa), Andrew Austin Hughes (Jenny), Gena Hughes Harth (Earl). Their 8 grandchildren, Kristina, Justin (Natalie), Tyler, Sara, Ellie, Cooper, Andy, Kady; 3 great grandchildren, Gannon, Serenity, Samantha.
“Charlie” known to most, has had a full life. He was one of the first Eagle Scouts in NC to receive the honor of “God and Country” award. He was a teacher/mentor for 54 years, 52 of them in the Norfolk City School system. He taught a variety of sciences as well as specialized classes ranging from many phases of Marine Science, hands-on programs, camping programs, outdoor classroom curriculum, and was very active with the restoration of the oyster population of the Chesapeake Bay. He was one of three people responsible for the restoration of the outdoor learning classroom restored and used by Oceanview Elementary School, later named in his honor as the Charles E. Hughes Maritime Forest. He was the first program director for the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia's Camp Chanco,Surry, VA.; he remained actively instrumental with them for over 40 years. Other camps he was actively involved in were Sky Ranch(NC), JCC Tween Travel Camp(VA), Camp Hanover(VA).
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 (internment service at a later date). A reception to follow immediately at the funeral home.
