He grew up in Fort Washington, Maryland. He attended Grace Brethren Christian School. Then Salisbury University (undergrad), University of Maine (Masters) and The Union Institute (Doctorate).
He returned to his beloved Eastern Shore to work as a theatre designer and professor at Salisbury University. Then progressed to multiple other design and teaching positions. Including Hargrove in Lanham MD, Christopher Newport University in Newport News Virginia, and ultimately several different time frames at Regent University in Virginia Beach. His designs and productions are too numerous to list. But when asked how he would like to be remembered, Dave said: “Call me a creator of worlds.”
And that was our Dave. One of his guiding life mottos was: WHIMSY. (and if that is read with the tonal inflection, he always used when saying it, know that he would smile) He had a quick wit, often expressed in perfectly timed unexpected remarks that fit the moment slightly askew. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
He loved teaching, and laughing, and bicycling, and beer. He loved Dad Jokes, and sitting on his deck, and singing church songs loud and off key. He loved his friends and his family. And he was loved back just as much.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Katherine N. Shuhy; his daughter, Lilian N. Shuhy; and his son, Eli J. Shuhy; parents Joseph L. Shuhy and Linda J. Shuhy (Whaley); his sister, Christy Ortiz and her husband, Silvestre; brother, Joe Shuhy and his partner Joanne Kelley.
A service will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 2pm at the Virginia Beach Community Chappel on Laskin Road. Followed by a light reception. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to The Doctor David E. Shuhy Memorial Scholarship Fund at Regent University. For details, please contact [email protected]
