Dorothy M. Hampton, “Dottie”, 73, was received by The Lord on February 28, 2016. She was born in Camden, NJ on December 16, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Howard William Brining and Dorothy Mae Leach; and was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Renee Litton. She graduated as class Valedictorian from Clayton High School in 1960.
Dottie is survived by her husband of twenty-seven years, Alfred Hampton (Fred) and two devoted sons: Bruce (Amy) Litton of Virginia Beach and Bob Litton of Norfolk; her brother Howard (Sandy) Brining of South Carolina. She leaves behind seven loving grandchildren including grandsons Jesse Litton, Mark Litton, Carter Litton. Granddaughters include Megan Eaton, Summer Stout, Brenna Litton and Haley Litton. Nephews include Chris and David Brining and two great grandchildren: Cameron and London Eaton.
Dottie will be greatly missed by her very best friend of forty-two years Debbie Whittaker, Jalyssa Robles and family, Michele Henry and family, and Mike and Lynn Atherholt.
Being a Navy wife she traveled back and forth across the USA, many times just with the kids. She had a special place in her heart for all children of God. She was a member of various PTA’s in the Virginia Beach Schools, her favorite being Rosemont Elementary. You would find her at the ball parks, football fields, and basketball courts rooting for her kids and grandkids. She worked the concession stand at Green Run High School and Carolanne Farms Civic League. Volunteering was her passion. It began in 1993 with the Seven Helpers of Tidewater United Church of Christ. This group branched off to become independent and expand the mission of feeding the homeless in Virginia Beach. This led her to become a fund raiser for the Volunteers of America Chesapeake Chapter and the Lighthouse Center at the Beach. She started volunteering with the Virginia Beach Council of Civic Organization (VBCCO). She helped plan the annual Volunteer Award dinner to recognize those civic minded individuals for their contribution to their communities. Party in the Park at Mt. Trashmore was another event held for the candidates pursuing public office. This allowed citizens to understand their stance on the issues. Lastly, she was a member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. Her belief in God was on display in many different facets within the church: the Potters House, Sisters in Christ, the Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless families, being a greeter on Sunday mornings and anything else she could do to be of service.
Dottie’s first job was at University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA as a medical transcriptionist. She also worked at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA, Atlantic Psychiatric Center in Virginia Beach and out of the home with MedLite as a transcriptionist. She also worked in accounts receivable at First Hospital Corporation and at Jack and Jill Ice Cream. From 2014 – 2016 she worked as a permanent cafeteria substitute at Tallwood High School. She was fond of the students there and will be greatly missed by those she befriended there.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sentara Windermere Rehab Center, Sentara Hospice House and Nurse/close friend Tammy Gish for their special care of Dottie.
