Heidy Sy Salinas

Heidy Sy Salinas, passed away on May 30, 2018. She was born on October 6, 1955 to the late Magno and Lydia Sy in the Philippines. She was born in a little place called Santa Teresa in 1955, second to the family of eight. She was raised as a Catholic, but as she grew up her mother, who was then a Protestant (UCCP), always encouraged them to attend her church. They were a happy and loving family because both of their parents were hard workers; she had said that she "tasted a good life." As a teenager, she was enrolled in a high school, called St. Joseph, a private school in their place. She was happy then with a lot of brothers and sisters, and a lot of her friends who she used to go out with, even though her parents were both strict. Still, she enjoyed her high school years to the fullest, which even included going to parties (but only sometimes). After high school, she was sent to Manila, one of the biggest cities in the Philippines, in order to choose a course as she was readying for a college degree. Her and my sister Miriam stayed with their grandparents, who encouraged them to go with them to church every Sunday, again in Manila. She met new friends in the area and greatly enjoyed much during her college years. Her proudest family moments include the day that she finished my nursing and gave her diploma to her parents. The next would be when she introduced Wendell, my husband to be, to them. Her proudest career accomplishments were when she graduated in nursing with a bachelor’s degree. Then when she passed her nursing license in the Philippines in 1978. She fondly looks back on working in Saudi Arabia as a DR (Delivery Room) nurse which was her first experience away from family and home. Her proudest civic involvement was being member of Filipino Independent Baptist Church (FIBC) for Christ. Some of her most special achievements and memories include when she got married in 1986 and then when she got pregnant and had Christine as her daughter in 1989. Then, when she passed her RN degree in 2008 in the US, and continued working at Sentara, but this time as a Staff Nurse in the Medical/Surgical unit. She is survived by her husband Wendell B. Salinas; and daughter Louise Salinas; her sisters, Miriam Dy Dagdagan, Melba Palmero, Cynthia Sy, her brother and sister-in-law, Joji and Maricar Sy, her loving FIBC church family, her Sentara work family, and anyone who's life she was able to be a blessing to.
