
Jean devoted over 50 years of her life to the noble profession of nursing, having graduated from Maryview Nursing School. Her dedication and compassion were evident throughout her long career as a Registered Nurse, where she was also a part of the pioneering team that began research on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Beyond her professional achievements, Jean was known for her adventurous spirit and love of travel. She cherished the time spent exploring new places and perfecting her golf swing. Those who knew her best will forever remember her wicked sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter to all who had the pleasure of her company.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, James Swanick; her parents, Teresa and James Ward; and her daughter, Judy Swanick. She is survived by her loving daughter, Jeanne Lauer, and cherished grandchildren Connor Shea Lauer, Esq. and Dr. Moira Kelly Lauer. She also leaves behind her brothers, Jim Ward (Pam) and John Ward (Olga); her sister, Julia Ward; and her brother-in-law, Dennis Swanick (Iris).
A funeral mass for Jean will be held Friday, April 4, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. Following the funeral mass will be a burial at 11:30 PM at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462.
Jean's legacy of kindness, warmth, and humor will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
