Mrs. Akers was born in Virginia Beach and was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Earl Akers and her parents Ryland Lee Grimstead and Mildred Mae Murphy. She retired from the Virginia Beach Public School System after eleven years of service and was a member of Back Bay Assembly of God. She enjoyed playing piano and singing gospel music with her family and performing with them at numerous nursing homes over the years. She enjoyed gardening and making her home a beautiful place.
Survivors include three children Brenda Baszkowski and husband Russell, Bryan Akers and wife Sandra, and Jason Akers; four grandchildren James Baszkowski, Shay Akers, Matthew Akers and D.J. Akers; a brother Duke Grimstead; two sisters Jean Moore and June Smith.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at Rosewood Memorial Park by The Rev. Kevin Milcarek. A reception will follow at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Sentara Hospice.
