Norris L. Bertelson

Chief Petty Officer Norris Bertelson died on January 20, 2016. He was born on a farm three miles west of Marvin, SD on February 25, 1921. He attended a one-room school house through the eighth grade. He graduated from Summit High School in 1940 and in 1941 joined the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after 21 ½ years to work for the Civil Service as a Test Cell Mechanic, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Haygood United Methodist Church since 1966. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 5 over 60 years. He was a member of AARP Bayside #4798. Norris was married to Nancy Wood for over forty nine years and was preceded in death by Nancy in 2001; his mother Hulda; his father Simon; three brothers, Markus, Chester and Harold; five sisters, Mildred Gunderson, Bernice Logsdon, Evelyn Carter, Della Lupinek, and Viola Kennedy; one daughter Ann Haines.

Norris is survived by one brother Bertel; two daughters Janet Burton and Amanda Bertelson; one son David all of Virginia Beach, VA; and six grandchildren, Patrick Burton, Va. Beach, VA; Thomas Burton, VA. Beach, VA; Christian Haines, San Antonio, TX; Matthew Haines, El Dorado Springs, MO; Faith Haines, El Dorado Springs, MO; and James D. Haines, El Dorado Springs, MO.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at Haygood United Methodist Church in the old chapel, 4713 Haygood Rd., Va. Beach, VA 23455 at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, February 24, 2016.
