Born in Providence, RI, William was the beloved son of the late Joseph E. Gaulin and Josephine (DiStefano) Gaulin. Though his life took him across the world, including time spent living in Ireland and Qatar, no matter how far he traveled, he always returned home to be with the family he cherished.
Brilliant, curious, and endlessly thoughtful, William earned his master’s degree in English from Brown University. His career was as varied as it was fulfilling. He served as a senior English lecturer at Northeastern University, a role he especially loved, and worked with several corporations, traveling widely to provide continuing education to adults. Fluent in both English and French, he brought a deep appreciation for language to everything he did.
A quiet soul with a profound love of solitude, William found his greatest peace in nature. He was an accomplished outdoorsman who spent countless hours hiking, kayaking, and birdwatching. He delighted in the natural world; animals, plants, rocks, and all the small wonders others might overlook. His gentle spirit extended even to the tiniest creatures; he was known to carefully capture and release any bug that found their way into his home.
Above all, William treasured time with his family. He was a devoted son who played a central role in his mother’s elder care for many years. A proud “foodie,” he especially loved the big Italian holidays with family, savoring every homemade dish and ending the night with his pipe, one of his most beloved rituals.
William is survived by his devoted sister, Rosanna Gaulin, with whom he shared a lifelong and special bond, as well as many cherished cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth J. Gaulin and Edward J. Gaulin.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Wednesday, May 20, from 9:00–10:30 AM at the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 820 Providence Street, West Warwick, RI, with burial to follow at St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston.
