George was born November 29, 1938 in Friesland, Netherlands. In 1957, he immigrated to the USA through Hoboken, New Jersey. There he was given the name George. He always wished he had kept his Friesian name Sjoerd. On April 13, 1960, he married Ellen VandenAkker; the Lord blessed them with 64 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents Cornelius and Simkje, and his brother, Piet.
George loved growing plants, starting with his dairy farm in New Jersey to his greenhouses and gardens in Michigan. He had a generous heart for anyone in need and loved serving others. George had an infectious personality and sense of humor. He could make new friends anywhere and truly enjoyed visiting with old friends.
Losing an arm in a farm accident did not slow him down from enjoying many hobbies, including, but not limited to, bowling and golf. Serving areas in need through CRC World Renew in disaster areas was also a passion.
George will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ellen; sons Case (Jan), Andy, Gerald (Melinda); daughter, Irene; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; seven brothers and two sisters; many in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
