She was born early she was only two pounds when born. The doctors didn’t think she would live. Her parents raised her in a shoe box with a light bulb for warmth. Glad she made it. Bertha grew up there finishing High School and attending the Barber College in Detroit and obtained a Beauticians license and worked for several years as a Beautician.
Berthas parents owned a boarding house in Detroit where they boarded people during the depression trying to make ends meet. Bertha and her mom would cook for the tenants, cooking and canning what they could. Bertha became a very good baker and cook.
Bertha met John H. Carnes just before he went to war in the Navy (WWII). Before John left for the Navy he proposed to Bertha and she accepted the proposal. After the war they were married 9/17/1948 which lasted for 57 years, John preceded her in death 11-1-2005. After the marriage they headed for California to live and find work. Work was slim so they headed out for the Galveston where Bertha’s mother’s relatives lived. While in Galveston Bertha and John bore two children Randy and Sharon. Bertha and John started us in Church; Bertha started teaching Sunday school there. Around 1957 Bertha and John moved to the mainland settling in League City, joining the League City First Baptist Church on Second Street. Bertha loved the church, teaching Sunday school, summer bible school and all the church events. We went to church every time the doors were open. Bertha loved the Lord, and was a Godly woman always and in all ways.
Bertha loved being a wife and mother. She loved getting her hair done getting it all puffed up; Dad would always say “you are going to get beautified!” She loved to decorate, our home decorations changed with the season, it was nice to see the season decorations roll by as the year progressed. Every holiday the home was decorated for that theme. Bertha kept a warm and Godly Home. Her favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens me.
