I first met Charles when I was probably 16 years old when Steve wanted his dad to meet me. I remember he was easy to be around and a great smile, and brown eyes that would light up when Steve walked into the room. I liked him from that day on, but had no idea our meeting that day would take use down a path that would entwine us with decades of memories.  
The seventies were crazy and I can see Charles sporting his leisure suit and first bell bottoms, but the day of our wedding he was there with his blessings and love for us, but those blessing and love turned into decades of someone that would be at our side to guide us through life struggles.
Charles believed in hard work, and used his gift of work his whole life. Everything he knew he would teach to anyone who was willing to learn. ( I would joke that when you ask Grandpa what time it was, he would tell you how to build a watch). I would enjoy watching hours on end Charles and Steve working on cars, or repairing things around the house. We did not need a number to a repairman, because Charles was only a phone call away.  He always walked in the door with a hug and smile and ready to go to work.
When we started our family, Charles became Grandpa.  We were so blessed to have this special man for our Children Grandfather.  During the years that our children were growing up Charles spent a lot of time with us, he was there to go on vacations, little league games, swim meets, dug out duty and dance recitals. 
 When Steve had to be at the hospital and I was left alone with the kids, Charles always would be there to help out, he would go to the grocery store, pick up the kids and help out with home work.  He was always there to help out with the science projects at school.  Keri and Grandpa worked on a science project all day and late into the night, it was a complete electrical operating horse barn. The barn had electric lights, electric horse walker, electric fans and electric gates. Keri was so proud of her horse barn, the barn is gone, but the memories 
[will] [always] [be] [a] part of memories of Grandpa. 
 I always loved [family] trips with Grandpa; we would drive all day and night, and would talk the whole trip.
Our conversation would be deep and interesting and I discovered more about him and his life's interest. Charles was rooted in his faith at a early age, and carried his faith to his children.  He loved that Steve followed a career in surgery, and he wish his path had allowed him to pursue medicine, because he was so interested in his son's love of surgery, and I believe he would have been great at it!!!  He was also a great listener and problem solver. He was easy to talk to and I knew he cared and he always validated my feelings.  I know there were circumstances in his life that he was deeply hurt, but he always took the high ground and never spoke of those things. In all the years I knew Charles, he never spoke badly of anyone, except maybe attorneys and tow truck drivers. He always had opens arms to anyone that came to his home, and was happy to help a neighbor, friend or family.
 I will always love you and I will carry your sweet smile and your love for your Son and our family with me until we meet again. I pray our children will carry a special memory, and a great story to tell about their Grandpa to their children.

He was a good smart man. He was a good provider and cared for the family he loved. He taught me how to be a catcher in baseball and took me to Astros games. He gave me good advice about business affairs. 
He made significant contributions to the people of this country through his work at General Dynamics, Lockheed the NASA shuttle program and the Waxahachie Super Collider Project. 
He was a hard working accomplished man.

Aunt Helen-
     I was very sad when mom called to tell me Uncle Charles had passed away.  I'll always remember him with nothing but fond memories; probably my favorite one was when he took us to visit NASA's Johnson Space Center when I was in 8th grade.  He was such a great man and I know how close he and dad were.  
     I'm sorry we are unable to travel to Texas for the funeral.  Please know that you and the boys and their families are in our thoughts and prayers.  It's comforting to know that Uncle Charles is at peace and gone home to his Lord.  If there is anything we can do, please let us know.
