Elmer Ray Johnson, 87, of Friendswood, Texas lost his short battle with cancer and passed away peacefully in his home with his family on Sunday July 13, 2025. He was born on August 20, 1937 in Liberty, Texas to his parents James Barney (J. B.) and Edith Norris Johnson.
Elmer graduated from Liberty High School in 1956 where he played football and basketball. He was President of VIC and the Science club, he was Vice President of FFA and the Student Council. He was also voted Mr. Good Sportsmanship! It was there at Liberty High School that he met his true love, Margaret Jean Elkins. Elmer and Jean were married on June 14, 1958. In 1960 he began to work for Goodyear Chemical Company in production but spent the vast majority of his career as a carpenter there at the Goodyear Plant. He retired in 1999 after 39 years of service for Goodyear where he made many lifelong friendships.
Elmer and Jean had one son, Elmer Ray Johnson, Jr (Bubba). They raised him in Houston, Channelview, Pasadena and Friendswood. They moved to Friendswood in 1975 and have lived there ever since. Elmer had a lifelong love of cars. Early on, he instilled that love in his son Bubba. He always had some sort of old car or project car ranging from Ford Model A’s to 57 Chevys. He, and his son Bubba seemed to spend every minute they could working on, restoring, and modifying old cars. They entered many a car show, bringing home numerous awards and trophies.
In 2024 Elmer began seeking a church home. He visited the Friendswood Baptist Church, found what he was looking for and became a member. A few months later he was baptized in his home by Pastor McCauley Austin surrounded by family and friends. It was a joyous occasion and Elmer treasured his new found faith and new church family. He could be seen there in church on Sundays for as long as he was able to attend. We feel one of the last things he heard was Pastor Austin praying for him.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents J.B. And Edith Johnson, and his brothers Jackie Johnson and Leo Johnson. He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Jean Johnson; His son, Bubba Johnson and his wife Marty; His two grandsons, Blake Johnson and his wife Lauren, Kyle Johnson and his wife Lauren; His four great grandchildren, Bennett, Penny and June Johnson and Toby Johnson.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Blake Johnson and Kyle Johnson, his nephews James Johnson and Craig Johnson, and his friends Bob Pond and Doug Sigler.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Doreth Hosang and Meredith Kott from IPR Hospice for the special loving care and attention they gave round the clock to Elmer these last few weeks.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society or Friendswood Baptist Church (315 West Shadowbend Ave, Friendswood, TX 77546)
