Brother Jones and I were friends the last 3 years of his life.    Pastor introduced us when he was 97 years old.  

We had a lot of fun hanging out.  Janice, another friend of mine from church, also joined our friendship.   

We were like the 3 Musketeers.  

We would go to Walmart.   Or get a bite to eat.    But our favorite place was Tutti Frutti.  

The three of us would sit at a table, talking and eating ice cream, like we were teenagers, hanging out after school.   

Those were fun days with good memories.  

But for now, Br. Jones, I’m sure you’re running Streets of Gold with your old friends!     

And  I look forward to the day when Janice and I will get to meet all of those friends.   And we can all walk down God’s golden sidewalk to a heavenly ice cream shop.  

What a great time that will be!  

So I will keep these thoughts of the future, and the memories of the past, in my heart for now.

When I went to Schertz, TX, to see Brother Jones for his birthday, he knew who I was!   He knew it was his birthday!  And he knew he had reached his goal:  100 years of age!

The smile on his face was priceless!

When Jimmy told me he would be going on soon, I wanted to give him one last tribute of our precious friendship.    So, I wrote him a poem.  

I hope he is smiling, for our friendship was priceless!

                          

 BROTHER  JONES

We had a lot of fun
In the last 3 years.

There was so much laughter,
But now there are tears.

We can’t help our sadness,
But our hearts rejoice, too.  

For behind heaven’s gates,
What all awaits you.

We’ll quietly ponder 
The times that we shared.  

Our memories will hold us,
And how we each cared.  

Til we, too, are called
To that glorious place,

And there, see each other,
Again, face-to-face.

One final story:

Sometimes Janice Mitchell would hang out with us.   We were like the 3 Musketeers!

We would go to Walmart.  As we walked in, Brother Jones would grab a cart and take off.   He would out-walk us!

One time he was interested in looking at some things, so I said,  “Stay in this aisle.  I am just going over there to pick up some dog treats.”

When I returned, he was nowhere to be found.  I called Janice.  “I lost Brother Jones again.  Do you see him?”

“Yes!  He’s way down another aisle, looking at tire gauges.”

I almost ran into Janice, as we approached him at the same time.  He would look at us, puzzled, and simply say, “What.”

But the most fun we had was going to Tutti Frutti.  We 3 would sit and chat like we were at an after school soda shop.    His mind was so sharp for 99 years old.   He contributed to the conversation as much as we did.  We even talked about his upcoming 100th birthday….

He really enjoyed hanging out with Janice and me.  We always had so much fun.  Our little group was priceless!

Here is another story:   

One day Brother Jones said to me,  “Let’s go roller skating!”

Ok how was I going to get out of this one!

Well, I didn’t know he had worked at a skating rink when he was 16!  And he was the envy of all the guys, because he was the best skater on the floor!

We went…..

I even let him look at the roller buddies:  skate helpers that look like walkers, but with wheels.   

Well, what a shame.  He was too tall for them.  Guess we can’t skate after all…..

He was disappointed, I could tell.   But we sat.   And we watched.   And we talked.     About his skate days.   How he could remember that far back!  At 98 years old!

He told me the only difference from his time, was the neon lights shining and flickering on the skate floor.   And how the lights glowed on the skaters, as they rolled past us.   I also noticed a glow on Brother Jones’ face, as this was all bringing back memories for him, of years gone by.   

It was such a fun afternoon, and the smile on his face was priceless!

I have some fun memories of the last 3 years, hanging out with Brother Jones.    We were pals!

Here are a few of our stories:

One day he said to me,  “Can you bless someone with these?”    It was an old box of crayons.

I left his house, and stopped at Flippers, before going to babysit.   One of the kids would surely enjoy the crayons.  

But at the restaurant,  in walked a young father with a baby and a 4 year old.   The child wanted to color.    The dad was struggling to get the baby in the high chair,  but began fumbling through his pockets.   He pulled out a pen.    The child took it, reluctantly.  

I ran to my car.    When I came back in,  I presented the box of crayons to the dad and said,  “Would your son like to have these?”   The father beamed a yes!

The child opened the box of crayons and just looked and looked.   He pulled out a gold crayon and admired it for the longest time.   Then slowly began to color.    As he did, he was in awe,  as if it were a dazzling piece of real gold.  

I smiled, to see the smile on the child’s face and the grateful wave from the dad.   

I couldn’t wait to tell Brother Jones that his give-a-way box of crayons had, indeed, been a blessing!   To a little 4 year old boy in a restaurant.  

The smile on Brother Jones’  face was priceless!

Brother Jones was a wonderful man of God. He would be in our Sunday school class even at 98 and was telling stories and praising the Lord and shouting. My favorite memory of him is when he insisted on taking Roger and I to lunch at Denny’s one day after church.  We would take him home sometimes. He was so excited having lunch together. He said Denny’s was he favorite place to go.  We talked and had a great time together and then took him home and we visited awhile and he told us stories of his life. A very full and exciting life. This is my favorite memory. There’s other but this one is my favorite. He will be missed and I’m sad and wished I could of hugged him one more time. But I’m happy for him because he’s home with the Lord and he said for the last two years he’s ready to go home.  You will be missed Brother Jones and we loved you. 

I am so sorry for your loss. Always loved seeing him when he was in Savannah. He loved all the Grandkids and Great Grandkids and they knew it! So energetic and genuine.
