after battling COVID-19.
James was born March 17, 1949 in Timpson, Texas to James Sr. and Vada Mills. He graduated
from Milby High School in 1967 and from the University of Houston in 1972. On July 3, 1969, he
married the love of his life, Modene. James spent over forty years serving the Houston
construction world with lumber and building supplies.
James is best known as a man of friends, family and faith. He was always ready for a Monday
night of dominoes or weekend cookout complete with a feisty game of canasta. James was
loved by so many friends. Generous with his time, influence and resources, James was always
willing and ready to help “make a way” for anyone. His family was his everything. Raising two
sons, Jeff and Brett, he never missed a baseball game, theatre or band performance. And when
grandchildren arrived, Pops rarely missed a soccer, softball, lacrosse, volleyball or basketball
game. A man of authentic faith, after James met Jesus he spent the rest of his days learning to
live like Him and serving at Heritage Park Baptist Church. He was known as the Candy Man,
Donut Man and deacon.
James is survived by his wife, Modene, two sons, Jeff Mills and his wife Connie of League City,
Texas, Brett Mills and his wife Emily of Waco, Texas; grandchildren, Amber, Tyler, Hattie, Lucy,
Gus, and Colton Mills, his sisters Sally Fleming and her husband David of Whitehouse, Texas
