Mildred Selma Amelia Schulz Riewe was born on August 1, 1926, to Hugo and Martha (Zimmermann) Schulz, on the family farm near Pottsville, Texas. She was baptized on August 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville, and confirmed there on December 19, 1939. On September 10, 1950, she married Clarence Victor Riewe, also of Pottsville, at Trinity.
She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, November 16, at a care facility in Houston, Texas, at 94 years of age after a brief illness.
Mildred and Clarence moved around to live in various West Texas communities as Clarence worked in the oilfield industry. They lived in Abilene, Texas, for a number of years before moving to League City, Texas, in 1965, for Clarence’s job at NASA. After Clarence’s death in 2012, she remained in their home of over fifty years in League City, moving to live with her daughter, Clarice, and son-in-law, Haskel, in early 2019.
Mildred was a dedicated Homemaker, caring for her family and volunteering at Hope Lutheran Church in Friendswood, Texas, after transferring their membership in 1965 from Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene. She loved flowers and vegetable gardening and sewing, making clothes for herself, her two daughters, and their dolls. She was a good cook, preparing many servings of her specialty made-from-scratch Banana Pudding for family and friends over the years.
In 1982, Clarence suffered a stroke and Mildred became his caregiver, tirelessly working to help him recover as fully as possible. She worked by his side doing refrigeration and tractor work for many years until his health declined. She was good at budgeting and mathematics although she only attended school through the seventh grade. She excelled at grammar and spelling, developing a passion for word search puzzles late in life.
Mildred and Clarence enjoyed traveling before he became ill, flying to Germany, London, Amsterdam, Hawaii (twice), Colorado, Tennessee, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. One of her favorite trip memories was about a big moose they saw standing in a river during a train ride in Alaska.
She was devoted to her three grandchildren, and enjoyed baking cookies and playing games with them through the years. She proudly celebrated all of their accomplishments, especially their college graduations.
Mildred was proud to do her civic duty this year, voting in the general election for the first time since 1972, 48 years ago. She often said that she didn’t want her vote cancelled out because she and Clarence did not agree on politics.
A lifelong Lutheran, Mildred had a strong faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and read daily from the Lutheran Portals of Prayer throughout the years, until shortly before her death.
Mildred is survived by her daughters, Clarice Brewer and husband Haskel of Pasadena, Texas, and Regena McMurrough and husband Tim of Spring, Texas; and grandchildren Erin Ray and husband James of Cypress, Texas; Daniel McMurrough of Midland, Texas; and Holly Casey and husband Kevin of Alvin, Texas. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and special family/friends Monroe Schulz, Joyce Sommerfeld, Rosalie Cates, Donnie Kleiber, Jinx Schkade, and Faye Perkins.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Clarence, parents Hugo and Martha Schulz, and brothers, Carl and Melvin Schulz.
Burial will be on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pottsville, Texas, with the graveside blessing conducted by Trinity Lutheran minister, the Reverend Teresa Davis. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons Daniel McMurrough, James Ray, and Kevin Casey; cousins Monroe Schulz, Joe Sommerfeld, and Ronald Karasek; and nephews Clifford, Victor, Wayne, and Mike Riewe, Brent Schkade, and Nathan Kopp.
