Obituary of Betsey J. Patterson
Betsey Jackson Patterson of Wellfleet, loving wife and mother of three children and five grandchildren, passed away at the age of 85 on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Betsey was born on December 23, 1936 in Cranston, Rhode Island to Roger and Dorothy (Palmer) Jackson where she spent her childhood years and attended Cranston High School. Upon graduation, she then earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Bryant College (now Bryant University) in 1956, where she was Sorority President of Alpha Phi Kappa. In 1957, she married her college sweetheart Donald Morey Patterson and they raised three sons, Steven, Michael, and Randall. After getting married, Betsey and Don traveled with his business and raised her family throughout the United States living in California, New Jersey, and Connecticut before retiring to Wellfleet. Betsey had a love for Wellfleet, a passion for genealogy and strong ties to her family history (dating back to the original descendants' of The Mayflower). She expanded her passion to become the Rich Family Genealogist for many years and helped families trace their own family history. She also served multiple roles for the Town of Wellfleet including Cemetery Commissioner, Voter Register and member of the Wellfleet Historical Society. Betsey was also an avid gardener, loved Wellfleet’s beaches and enjoyed sharing her home in Wellfleet to extended family and friends. Betsey deeply loved her husband, Don, her children and her grandchildren and proudly celebrated her 50th Wedding Anniversary with Don in 2007, before his passing in 2008. Betsey is survived by her three sons, Steven, Michael (Ellen) and Randall, her 5 grandchildren, Ethan, Maya, Kaitlyn, Calla, and Caroline, and her sister, Margery Chambers (Ken), along with many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 5 to 7pm at Nickerson Funeral Home in Wellfleet, MA, followed by a funeral service Friday October 7, 2022 at 11am Wellfleet Congregational Church. Immediately thereafter, the family will hold a private burial at their family plot at Oakdale Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband. A celebration of her life will be arranged next year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wellfleet Historical Society.
