Toni was born in the Bronx, NY, in a close-knit Italian neighborhood, daughter of Dr. Anthony A. Caputo and Vivian (Laquidara) Caputo. Her mother’s sister, Aunt Rose, taught her to play piano, and the piano became one of her true loves which led her to attend Juilliard school of music in Manhattan.
She loved jazz, and played dinner music professionally in a number of upscale restaurants on Long Island, as well as playing in several rock-and-roll bands throughout her 20’s and thirties. In the 1980s she and her partner Pam moved to Provincetown and quickly found out that musicians on Cape Cod are truly “starving artists”.
So, she became a nurses’ aide for VNA Hospice while she attended Cape Cod Community College and earned her RN. As a CNA (Certified Nurse Aide) she cared for many AIDs patients here in Provincetown, some of whom became close friends. Altogether she worked for the VNA for 22 years in various positions before retiring.
During her retirement she became an avid bird photographer and spent many hours in the Audubon Society nature preserve in Wellfleet. She was always trying to catch that kingfisher in Gull Pond just as he caught a fish, but she never got the shot she wanted. Toni and Pam were finally married in 2012 and were together for 50 years at the time of Toni’s passing.
Toni leaves behind her beloved wife Pam, two nephews, Ronald Hoina, Jr. and his wife Stefanie and son Zachary, and Scott Hoina and his wife Barbara and children Jake and Cali, numerous cousins, and many patients whom she cherished. She was predeceased by her sister Elizabeth and Elizabeth’s husband Ronald Hoina.
There will be no visitation and services will be private. Donations in Toni’s memory may be made to the Visiting Nurses of Cape Cod.
