Dear Friends and Treasured Family Members,
Today we mourn the loss of our dear family member and friend Hugh Allen Major. Though today is a day for mourning and reflection, it is also a day for remembrance and gratitude. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for paying respects to my beloved Poppa.
I was lucky enough to have him come to many upon many of my sporting and schooling events. I remember his phone number to this day because I would call upon him many times to update him on the game that he may have had to miss. One in particular story I would like to share with you today.
During my first season playing Ringette on a provincial level, my grandfather was able to assist me in transportation since my mother doesn’t drive and my dad was usually working during this high-demand season. It was also my second year playing for Pickering while still living in Oshawa.
The team that I played for had many unwritten rules that we had to follow since the coach had zero ties to anyone of the players. One rule in place was no one was allowed to undress after a game until he had finished talking. With that being said, no one was allowed to come in or leave either. Finally, it came down to one final game to continue on to the Provincials, Pickering versus Oshawa on Oshawa’s home ice. We were able to win the game with my grandfather in attendance (we went on to go undefeated in the Provincial championships during March Break).
I remember being super excited to attend the championships for the first time ever and being so happy to kick my old team’s butt. As the coach was doing his usual post-game talk, there was a knock at the door. Who dared to knock on the door?? Well to my surprise it was for me. So assuming to get yelled at later for this, I rushed out of the room to see my grandfather standing there with this big smile on his face. I knew he was so proud just by looking at him. Though I have many memories of him, that one in particular is one I will treasure for a long time. In fact, I still have the medal and am dedicating it to him in his honor.
I am grateful for everyone’s support of each other as this disease is very heartbreaking and difficult to deal with. I know now he is with his family and friends up in the sky and able to have all of his memories and feelings back in order. The disease will no long affect him and can now rest in peace.
Thank you Poppa for being a wonderful grandfather and until we meet again, please take care.
Sincerely,
Patricia Hurley (nee Major)
