Joseph Nathaniel Deane (Hilton Deane)

Joseph Nathaniel Deane, affectionately known as Hilton Deane, was born on September 30, 1935, in the parish of St. Joseph, Barbados. He was the fourth of twelve children—ten boys and two girls—born to the late Thaddeus and Miriam Deane.

Joseph attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School and, along with his siblings, worshipped at St. Bernard’s/St. Anne’s Anglican Church, where he was baptized and later confirmed.

After leaving school, he joined the Barbados Regiment (now the Barbados Defence Force) and later worked with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Transport and Works. During his years in the Pharmacy Department at Collins Limited in Bridgetown, he developed a keen interest in the medical field—an interest that would ultimately shape the course of his life.

In 1970, Joseph emigrated to Canada, where he married Doreen, also a native of Barbados. Together they welcomed their son, Sheldon. Doreen was a nurse and played an important role in helping Joseph transition into the profession. Driven by determination and a strong work ethic, he quickly became a Registered Nurse and went on to serve with distinction at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Department of Health. For more than ten years, he worked both positions simultaneously, demonstrating the perseverance, dedication, and commitment that had been instilled in him during his upbringing in Mellowes Hill, St. Joseph, Barbados.

On July 6, 2026, after a short illness, Joseph was called home by his Heavenly Father. He was predeceased by his beloved wives, Doreen and Marva, whom he loved dearly.

Joseph was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He opened both his heart and his home to many. He was a faithful Christian whose love for God, his church, and his church family remained unwavering throughout his life.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Denise (Harriette), Randall, Stephen, Shirley (Rose), and Sheldon; his stepchildren, Debra and Glenroy; daughter in law, Tammy

his grandchildren: Kevin, Daeshaun, Jordan, Shemar, Dennis, Marissa, Ayiesha, Tramaine, Shanice, and Kymani;

his great-grandchildren: Caleb, Kaydence, and many others;

his brothers: Martin, Warren, and Roy; and his sister: Morene.

He was predeceased by his siblings: Oscar, Colin, Egbert, Grantley, Clayton, and Marion.

Joseph also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members, including his cousin Rawl Deane.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the friends and healthcare professionals who enriched Joseph’s life and cared for him throughout his journey. While it is impossible to name everyone who touched his life, we would like to offer special recognition to his dear friends: Kennedy and Esther Marshall, Jean Smith, Patsy Coward, the Clark family—especially Winston and Dolene—the Lewis family, particularly Etheline and the late “Boyfriend” Lewis, Pam Dove, the late Dudley Smith, Carlson Husbands, Louis and Gretchen Allman, Monica Hoyte, and Keith Foster.
