David Michael Goodman, age 70, of Cornelius, NC and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest on February 6, 2019. He had spent the weekend prior celebrating his Mother’s 96th birthday in Boston, MA; doing what he loved most: being with his entire family.
David was born in Stamford, CT in 1948 to Mildred and the late Russell Goodman and grew up in Manchester, NH. He graduated from Cheshire Academy in 1967 and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science in 1971.
David began his career at Alfred Angelo and continued to hone his textile expertise at YKK (USA) Inc. For the past 33 years, he owned Diversified Marketing Group (or DMG, reflecting his initials), selling military textiles to government contractors. He was widely respected within the industry and received many awards for his innovative contributions to military end-items..
There were two things that filled David’s heart: his family and his love of fishing. He was the adoring husband of Barbara Goodman; the loving father of Emily and Rachel Goodman; and devoted stepfather of Samuel (Rubina) and Brian (Liza) Batt. He was the best big brother to Lynne (Bob) Gaynor—embarrassing her at every opportunity – and hilarious uncle to their sons, Sam and Danny Gaynor. David (“Grampy”) was crazy about, and adored by, his four grandchildren, Liam, Charlie, Henry, and Lyla, and infused them with his love of boating and fishing — training them to become the youngest captains on Lake Norman. His whole family was the pride and joy of this life. As David was his family’s source of strength in life, so shall he continue to be in the future.
His love of boating and fishing emanated from his father and grandfather at an early age in New England. A licensed Captain, David, with Barbara, loved boating on the Jersey shore, the Chesapeake Bay, and most recently, where they lived, on Lake Norman. David would spend every day possible on the water and he loved sharing his passion for boating with others. As the Educational and Boating Safety Chairman of the Fleet Committee, David authored two books on the topic for The Peninsula Yacht Club.
David made it a priority to give back and make a difference. Since moving to Cornelius, NC from Wynnewood, PA, he was active in many organizations, including the Peninsula Yacht Club; the Kent Cook Institute at the Nook; Novant Health; and the Charlotte Jewish Community. Most recently, David was voted Chairman-Elect of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Board of Directors and was very excited and proud to begin his term in January, 2020.
David had an unmatched capacity for loving his family, building and maintaining friendships, and supporting his community. He had a joyful, loving, incredibly generous, and “larger than life” personality with a gift for making everyone he met feel so special and happier for having spent time in his presence. A remarkable man, David touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed and will forever remain in the hearts of all who loved him. At this time, the family asks that everyone continue to live every day to the fullest. Smile often. Love a lot. Give back. Find Joy.
The family is so appreciative of the overwhelming outpouring of love. Should you desire to make a donation in David's memory, please consider his favorite charities: Blumenthal Performing Arts of Charlotte, NC (Junior Ambassadors Program, Linda Beck Endowment, and Board of Directors Discretionary Fund); Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community of Charlotte; and Kent Cook Institute at the Nook.
Private family services are being held in his memory.
