Gale passed away peacefully at home on April 28th. She leaves a legacy of beauty, style, laughter, and love. Born Margaret Gale McQuire on February 24, 1935, in Vancouver, Canada, to the late Marguerite Madden and Courtlandt Freer McQuire, Gale was the last surviving of five children. She was preceded in death by her cherished siblings, Elodie Lewis, Courtlandt McQuire, Harry McQuire, and James McQuire.
Blessed with captivating inner and outer beauty, Gale was a natural in front of the camera. As a young woman in New York City, she modeled for famous photographers, including Norman Parkinson, and represented big brands like White Rock while working at the Ford Models Agency.
Gale was married for 35 years to Carlos Salgado, the father of her two children, Elodie Salgado and Carlos Salgado. The family started out in New York City but moved to the Bahamas, Philadelphia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gale's ability to connect with others transcended borders and cultures. Gale remained fluent in Brazilian Portuguese and enjoyed speaking it with her son.
Gale possessed an insatiable curiosity and a lifelong love of learning, evident in her voracious reading habits. Her creative soul found vibrant expression through painting, a passion she generously shared by inspiring others to pick up a brush. For many years, she was a docent at the New York Metropolitan Museum, where hundreds of inner-city children hung onto her every word as they marveled at magnificent works of art.
Gale married Fred Alger in 1997. They were married for 26 years and lived in New York, Geneva Switzerland, East Hampton, and Palm Beach. Gale embraced life with enthusiasm at every age. Even after turning sixty, she eagerly pursued new skills, including golf, snow skiing, and bridge.
Throughout her life, Gale was a supportive presence in the lives of her extended family and a loyal friend to her cherished girlfriends. Gale's warmth, creativity, and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will continue to inspire and uplift us.
Pictured above, Gale leaves behind her three grandchildren, Stefan Rosquellas-Carvallo, Reese Salgado, and Grant Salgado, her daughter-in-law Amy Salgado, and her two children Elodie and Carlos.
