Herbert Michaelson was a hard working, giving man, volunteering for his temple, Shellbank Jewish Center-Brooklyn where he served as President, his community, Kings Point he was the President of his HOA from 1998 thru 2018, and the elderly, he volunteered at nursing home in Brooklyn 1993 when he retired, offering his friendship and service, to the residents.
He retired to Florida in 1995 where he and his beloved Joyce, enjoyed their retirement years, in Kings Point, Delray Beach, Florida where they were fortunate to have a lot of family close by.
At age 90, 2018, he moved to Texas, so that Sue, Rick, Tina and Brent, could be there for him as he needed more help with independent living. He resided at Liberty Heights Graceful Retirement Independent Living, fondly referred to as the cruise ship that never leaves port. He absolutely loved his life at Liberty Heights, where he thrived these past years, making so many new friends; he was very popular with the all the staff and residents. This past fall, the residents nominated, Herb for President. He was loved by the teenage servers/ helpers there, he considered them, his ‘adopted’ grandchildren, he had pictures of them on his fridge, each one, was very special to him.
He had some health challenges these past years, but received utmost care from a team of physicians at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical school. Under their care, he continued to thrive independently, until he contracted COVID-19, December 30, and lost the battle with the enemy on January 6, 2021.
These past years in Texas, Sue and her family were able to hover over him ‘helicopter Mom style’ ensuring he was safe, happy, and did not want for anything. He lived his life to the fullest, always a smile on his face, enjoyed every day, and everyone knew his favorite saying, ‘Right’!
We are heartbroken to lose him, but thankful he lived a full life where he gave love to, and enriched everyone around him, knowing he is going to be with Joyce again, gives us some peace.
