Richard was a great, highly intelligent man with a wonderful sense of humor and a lover of classical music and dramatic theatre. Richard faced his issues like everything else, with engineering inquisitiveness, humor and pragmatism. Richard was a strong personality and once you met him you never would forget him.
His parents Beatrice & Harry Goodwin and in-laws Erna & Charles Reischer pre-deceased him as did his grandparents Dora and Louis Ment for which there was always a special love. He leaves a wife Giselle T. Reischer, Giselle’s Sister Faye and her husband Kenneth (“Chip”) Merritt, Laura, Dan, Hazel and Natalie Huffines and Charlotte and Thomas Leavitt as well as many cousins.
Richard always spoke about the family business Ment Brothers Iron Works which his grandfather started along with his brothers. He worked there each summer “in the yard” and that became the basis of his studying Engineering.
Richard holds a BS undergraduate degree from Long Island University, a MS in from New York University and a Doctorate from Technion/WOU. He holds Professional Engineering licenses from NY, NJ and VT. Dr. Goodwin has presented/published over 70 papers and four books dealing with environmental and energy issues. He was a civil, sanitary and environmental engineer in private practice since 1985 and was an expert in Coal Residue, Waste-to-Energy and use of Shale Oil/Gas. His last book was Combustion Ash Residue Management – An Engineering Prospective 2nd Edition published in 2014.
Richard cared deeply about the State of Israel and lived in Israel for 3 years and studied at the Technion. He was most proud of his accomplishments in growing plants in the desert using reused treated water. Richard continued to marvel over the “start-up” nation Israel was to become in the various technologies including the recent discovery of oil and gas in Israel.
Richard also performed volunteer activities wherever he resided. At Valencia Shores he was a long-time board member known to work for the benefit of the community focused on engineering efforts including the management of the weirs, generators and ensuring that the community did not flood and have proper lighting from the FPL utility. Many remember the Science Club that had interesting topics for the community to enjoy.
