1927 – 2010
I Eugene Albert Prows, like Nephi of old, was born of goodly parents on March 26, 1927. I thank my Mother, Ann Budd Prows and my Father, Charles W. Prows for the sacrifices they made on my behalf and for everything which they taught me.
During WWII, at age 16 ½, I enlisted in the United States Maritime Service serving onboard the USS John Steele and the Carroll Victory as a firemen and water tender.
I made the best decision of my life by eloping with Dorothy Lillie McCullough to Elko, Nevada on September 4, 1948. Dorothy who was eighteen at the time thought she would have married a man who was “smoother” but I was a very persuasive talker. Our marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple in 1962.
I joined the Utah Power & Light Company in 1952, working as a skilled helper at the Jordan Plant in Salt Lake City. In 1954, I joined the company’s apprentice program and after attending night school for several years was awarded journeyman mechanic status. I became foreman of maintenance at the Gadsby Steam-Electric Plant in 1971 and worked as a Maintenance Supervisor until I was offered early retirement in the mid 80’s.
Dorothy and I served a mission in Shiprock, New Mexico in 1990. I have always felt an affinity for the Native American people and believe I was ordained to this service before I was born.
Over the past decade I have struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. There is nothing more frightening then to lose then one’s mind. I wish to thank my wife Dorothy (who expired in Feb. 7, 2010), my children and my Savior Jesus Christ for the help they have given me in bearing this cross. I assure you that as I passed through the veil on April 16, 2010 a brilliant awakening transpired.
Eugene is survived by his two children, Michael L. Prows (Elaine) and Gail J. Hansen (Jim); his sisters, Zelta Nebeker (Dale) and Glenda Kehl, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 13 step great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the saints and angels at the Rocky Mountain Care Center for the friendship which they extended to our Mother and the loving care given to our Father. Also, a special thanks is extended to Rocky Mountain Hospice for the comfort given to dad on his voyage into eternity.
Funeral services will be held Monday April 19, 2010 - 2:00 PM, at the Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah.
