On Tuesday December 13, 2022 our loving husband and father, George Mageras, passed away at home with family by his side. It was a heartbreaking loss but he is at peace and leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories.
George was born to Anton and Wilma Mageras. His father immigrated from Achladokampos, Greece at age nine. In 1954, Anton was tragically killed in a work accident at Kennecott Copper. George was 15 when his father died and being the oldest of five children became head of the household. Losing his father at such an early age had a profound impact on his life. Through this adversity, he formed a special bond with his mother and siblings that lasted a lifetime.
George graduated from Cyprus High School in 1957 where he made lifelong friendships. After high school, he joined the Army. Basic training in Fort Ord, California was his first life experience outside Utah. From there his personal and professional career took him to many places: Spokane WA, Denver CO, Southern, Central, Northern CA, and Reno NV. He was a general contractor, builder of custom homes, and real estate developer. He was very proud to honor our veterans through his efforts to develop San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA. He had an amazing ability to build relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. People loved him.
In October 1994 he met Barbara Hammond and their life took them from Northern California to Reno and then back to West Valley City, just a few miles from his childhood home in Magna. She was his loving caregiver until the end.
George had three sons with his first wife Joan Hatch Freed, John, Doug and Steve. He was their best friend, mentor and together they made the perfect golf foursome. They have thousands of days on the golf course and watching/attending many sporting events. Golf road trips to Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, and other destination courses were special. He was a great father.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, sons John (Holly), Doug, Steve, his grandchildren Jessica, Andrew, Jordan, Sophie, Brandon, great grandson Blake, his sister Barbara Paulos, brother John (Sharlene), and preceded in death by sisters Georgene McQuivey and Eliane Smith.
A visitation for George will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Valley View Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah 84120. A funeral service will occur Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 12:00 PM at Valley View Memorial Park & Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in George's honor.
