I only met Nick a few times through work. I hadn't spoken to him in a few years, so I tried to call him at work today. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I could tell he was a great man within the first few minutes of meeting him. My lasting memory of Nick was the picture he proudly displayed in his office of his family.

Peace to his rest a great missionary unfortunate is a loss for us here on earth and a blessing to the heavens but he is an angel and pray for us

Britta - It has been two weeks and still unreal.  We laughed, talked and worked together in Ogden.  I have children older than Nick but he taught me daily.  I am a better person having known him.  
Remember the Savior is close and will help you through difficult times ahead.  I can tell you first hand that this is true.

Ann and Darrell, I am saddened to learn of Nick's passing.  I smiled when I read that he collected unusual items, because I remembered some of the things he collected in High School. Nick always had a a sense of humor that endeared him to those around him.  He was such a good friend to my boys when they faced the challenge of making new friends in OK. I will be forever grateful for your family's friendship and Christlike example. I can only pray that the sorrow you are experiencing will wane as you focus on all the joy Nick brought to this world.

I am so sad to hear of Nick's passing. I grew up with him only a few streets away and have fond memories of Elementary School and our common friends.  Nick has certainly left a last mark on those people who knew him. I pray you seek peace and comfort at this time.

I am an employee for DTZ, working at a different account here in the Lexington area. I have never met Nick, but I just wanted you to know that I am terribly sorry for your loss and that I just lifted up a prayer for you. Reading all these wonderful comments, I can surmise that Nick knew the Lord and because of that, you will see him again. While this is no substitute now, it give hope to the future. Nick was one of my earliest mentors when I joined DTZ.  I had heard many good things about him and was eager to meet him and work with him.  I was fortunate to have him help guide me in various aspects of management; it was a pleasure to work alongside such a capable and kind person.

I remember when we met I was just coming out of the depths of grief for my dad, and you said you wished there was something you could have done to make it better. My heart aches for your loss.  Nick was truly a wonderful person inside and out.  I will cherish the countless memories I have as a youth as we went on doughnut runs after seminary, talked too loud in the library before school, and dressed up with random items kept in his trunk for stake dances when we were suppose to and not suppose to.  He made high school a little more bearable because he was my friend.  I am also grateful for a loving Heavenly Father and that families are forever.

For the last 6 years Nick has been one of my closest friends.we worked together,laughed together, and played together. He was an example to me in so may ways. I will never forget the hours we spent fishing together in boats and on the ice. Memories of our  trips together to Reno, the Gorge and Powell will always bring a smile to my face. My heart goes out to Britta and the girls. Nick influenced so many for good. I am thankful to have known him and to have him as a friend.

I have known Nick all his life!  My son adored all of the Gillen boys, especially BIG NICK!!  I am devastated about Nick's passing, but am assured by my Faith, and I know Nick is in a better place!! I worked with Nick at Westinghouse, Western Zirconium Plant, and thought he was a fine young man.  I never had any problems with him and he was always good to work with.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and hope they can heal with God's love and no longer feel pain, but rememer him with love.

NIcks journey continues. Sooooooo happy that to say I was part of that growing up. When I think of Nick I can't help it think,of him smiling, laughing, and engaging all with his love. Darrell and Ann, I saw your son's obituary last night. So sorry to hear about your son's passing. I just heard from Bruce Pugsley and he lost his 35 year old son to cancer - leaving a wife and a young family. Thank goodness for our testimonies of the Plan of Happiness. My last conversation with you was in September 2010. We have been unable to contact you at your telephone number and email address in Tulsa. My deepest condolences to Nick's wife and children and other family members.  I was a friend of Elder Gillen's in the mission field.  He was one of the happiest missionaries I think I have ever met.  I remember thinking that his smile would just light up any room.  The people of Guatemala LOVED him and his heart.  May the testimony you have of Jesus Christ help all of you find peace and comfort both now and in the future. Nick, We will always love you and your great example as a manager and communicator during your time at Western Zirconium working for Unnico.  You are missed so terribly there but we know even so much more by your dear family and friends.  You are free now.  We will never forget you buddy.

It was with great sadness that I learned this morning that Nick had passed away.  It was always a pleasure to have him in our office. He was so pleasant, and so very, very proud of you and his darling girls. And though we only ever saw him a couple of times each year around tax time, when he walked through the door with his soft smile, it felt like an old friend had dropped in. I'll miss his warm smile and happy demeanor.

To the Gillen Family: Having known Ann and Darrell Gillen since high school, and having my son, Troy, married to their daughter, Christine, I can say by personal knowledge and experience that their loving family values were firmly in place when Nick came into the family. He is one of the finest young men I've ever met. From experience, I know they are a family who deeply loves one another and spends time developing and teaching the stories of the life of the Savior--teaching from the youngest child to the oldest adult. They have always loved being a family, but now they are having to rely on each another to teach about grief and how to live without Nick by their side--that's what eternal families do, though. Because they all love the Savior, they are standing strong knowing that Nick arrived "home" to the Savior on September 11, 2013, where Nick got what he needed--a loving embrace by the Savior and by family members who have passed through the veil before him. Because they love and trust in the Savior with every fiber of their beings, Nick's family is grateful for the time they were allowed to have Nick on this earth. We all need to be ever constant in living out the days of our lives with the Gift of the Holy Ghost to help comfort us in time of heartache, pain and suffering--never judging others as we strive to live our lives as the Savior taught us to do. My prayers are with during this time of loss--each of you--that you will soon find comfort when you think of Nick. I love you with all my heart.

I first met Nick as an up and coming co-worker at our Westinghouse site in Ogden Utah.  Through our years of working together he became a close friend and not just a co-worker.He was a blessed person. He will be missed but will always be remembered.
