Patricia (Patsy) Christina Elaine Helga Jean Duarte Hartt was born November 25, 1929, in Clear Creek (Carbon County), Utah, and died peacefully March 7, 2020, at her home in West Valley City, Utah, where she had lived for 60 years, surrounded by her family.
She is now in heaven with her mother, Christine Mary Gordon, lost to her when she was only three years old; her father, Samuel Duarte; her older brother, Gordon; and her son, Terry F. Hartt.
Patsy spent her early childhood in Sonora, Mexico, with her parents. After her mother’s death, she returned to Clear Creek to be raised by her grandmother, Helga Jonson Gordon, and grew up alongside her aunts and uncles. She loved music and sang with her brother.
Patsy met a handsome man in a zoot suit, Frank Shelby Hartt, and married him in 1946. They lived in Clear Creek and had a family: two sons, Terry and Gary, and daughter Brenda. They moved to Salt Lake in 1954 and completed their family with their second daughter, Sandra in 1961. Patsy later married Ronald Smith in 1982. Throughout the years Patsy was blessed with grandchildren: Lelainia, Sascha, Brian, Jennifer, Ashlee, Sarra, Rafher, Piper, Zachary, Patrick, Emilee, Kevin, Elgin. Starting in the 1990s came the great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Sedona, Sierra, Xana, Vienne, Kathryn, Gavin, Kanoelani, Keoni, Lily Ann, Harrison, Noah, Asher, Daxton, Eily, Sara, Mallory, Harley, Alexia, Rustin and Collin. And in 2019 she welcomed a great, great grandson, Taimani (TJ).
Patsy’s career through the years included: a position at Purity Biscuit; working part-time for the Sisters at Judge Memorial cooking their meals on Sunday; an outreach worker with Community Action Program. She took a position with US West as a CSR before she retired in 1995.
Patsy was generous with her love and lived by the Golden Rule. Her home was open to everyone. Her best times were playing dice, cards, bingo and frequenting Wendover, but ultimate joy for Patsy was spending time with her family. Patsy loved her little dogs (Paris, Pierre, Suzette), and they were at her side all the time. She loved to dance and loved hearing mariachi music. She loved to travel, whether it was camping, cruising or just sleeping out with her grandkids in the backyard. She had a lifelong unwavering faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ and found comfort in the Blessed Virgin Mary. Patsy’s example of Christ-like love will never be forgotten.
The funeral Mass will be held March 17, 10:00 am at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church 3560 W 3650 S West Valley City, Utah, interment following mass, at Valley View Memorial Park 4400 W 4100 S, West Valley City, Utah. Friends and family may gather at Patsy’s home 3861 W 3240 S West Valley City, for a celebration of life following services.
