

Ray, 90, passed away Friday, November 6, 2020 of cancer at his home. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Velene McFadden Chatwin. Ray was born April 3, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leonard Losee Chatwin and Ida Burl Jex. He was the oldest of 6 children. Ray grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah until the age of 11 when his family moved to Ogden, Utah for his Dad's job at Hill Airforce Base. His family then moved to Clearfield, Utah where he attended David High School.
Ray was always involved in sports and was very busy going from one sporting event to another. From basketball, baseball and even lettering in boxing. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served a mission in the Northern California Mission. Upon returning from his mission he attended BYU and was on the freshman baseball and basketball team. During his time at BYU he met the love of his life, Velene McFadden. At this point he was drafted into the Army where he was sent to Panama. His job was a Radar Operator/Spotter. In reality he spent most his time playing baseball and basketball for the Army against the other military branches. Ray and Val returned to Taylorsville where they were able to build their home and raise 7 children.
Ray was Bishop in the Taylorsville 7th Ward, along with being a high councilman, teacher and many stake callings. He is known for being involved in Boy Scouts as District Chairman in the Wasatch Peaks District, Golden Eagle District and the Pony Express District where he was a leader. He taught merit badge classes at Indian Hills School, Council Camping Committee, and was a Pow Wow leader. He received the Silver Beaver Award and many other scouting awards. Ray was involved in the running of the Valley Sports Association for 15 years; 5 of those years as president. He moved his family to South Jordan, Utah where he continued to be involved in all his activities. He also was involved in amateur Softball Association as the commissioner and the Utah State President. Ray and Val were able to go on two missions in the inner city mission in Salt Lake City. He spent many years volunteering at the Gale Center in South Jordan. Ray and his son, Jim were co-owners of Diamond Doors. He continued to work up to the day he was diagnosed which was one week ago. He had the unique gift of connecting with each individual in a special way. He was involved and loved being with his family, be he also loved everyone around him especially the children. He was a great teacher, example, and mentor to everyone. He passed with no regrets and what "if's". He has always said he had a great life.
Ray is survived by his children Randy (Jill), Dana Speirs, John (Carlene), Scott (Debbie), Teri (James) Sorensen, Jim (Lisa) and Jeremy; Sisters Maxine Hamblin and Gerri (Ralf) Larsen; Sister-in-law Sheri Chatwin; 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents Leonard Losee Chatwin and Ida Burl Jex; wife, Velene (Val) McFadden Chatwin; brothers William Jex and Leonard Jex; sister Burl Gene Chatwin Quinn and daughter Carol Ann Chatwin.
A viewing will take place on Thursday, November 12 from 10:00-10:50 AM at the LDS Ward House located at 11677 S Grandville Avenue, South Jordan, Utah. Funeral Services will follow 11:00 a.m. at the same location. He will be laid to rest at Valley View Memorial Park located at 4400 W 4100 S, West Valley City, Utah.
