Our loving father, grandfather, brother, son, faithful friend & servant, Dub Bludworth passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at home in Salt Lake City. He was born May 21, 1941 in Galveston, Texas to Winford C. Bludworth, Sr. and Laura Hallett Bludworth.
His greatest love was his family, including his siblings, children and grandchildren. He had four siblings whom he loved with all his heart. Their well-being was a constant concern for him. He was instructed by their mother to always love each other and he took her wish as a command and worked diligently to fulfill it. He had nine children including two who preceded him in death and one immigrant son whom he considered his own and treated as such in all meaningful ways. He was always available for his grandchildren and spent countless hours taking them on adventures, participating in their life milestones and doing what he most loved - “grandpa-ing.”
He was a graduate of Ball High School in Galveston. He was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. His career spanned various roles primarily supporting the U.S. Military and the U.S. Government. He was a patriot and proud of his service, in and out of uniform.
He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as an adult and had an unwavering testimony of its truthfulness and loved the Book of Mormon and its witness of Jesus Christ. He served in various callings within the Church including being a stake and ward mission leader and leadership roles in various priesthood quorums. He was a committed Boy Scout leader to a generation of boys who received unparalleled training and adventures under his leadership. Most importantly he was a member missionary and constantly shared his witness of the Gospel and challenged those who had strayed to return. He was relentless in his sharing of what he knew to be true.
He was a pioneer in Alaska mountaineering and achieved first ascents and set numerous records, including many with his brother Harry with whom he formed a unique and enduring bond. Later in life he set out with lofty goals in long trail hiking and hiked in excess of 23,000 miles since retirement. On the trail he affectionately was known as “rubadubdub.”
Dub is survived by children, Winford III, Aaron (Holly), Sunshine (Matt) Bates, West, McCarrey (Shannon), Sage, Omot (Gizma) Adhom; 20 grandchildren; brother Thomas “Harry” (Maria) Bludworth; Sisters, Mary “Sudie” (Martin) Gately, Linda Quaglino, Constance “Connie” (Maurice) LeBlanc. Preceded in death by his parents, sons Timothy and Benson, and brother-in-law Carl Quaglino.
